The Gods of Attalia

The divine being of Attalia are intermingled with the fibre of the world itself, they are equally likely to be found in the celestial planes as found on the surface of the world itself mingling with the people. Some gods are good to people, others are evil, some take no interest in the world below, and others immerse themselves in the world, not always for the betterment of it's inhabitants.   Religious scholars have long believed there to be a hierarchy in the heavens. The gods are split into three celestial levels.   First there was the The Old Gods . Nine beings of unimaginable power, the creators of the material plane and the first beings in all the universe. Oaldur the god of knowledge was first among them, some scholars place him in his own celestial level as he is general understood to have created the rest of the Old Gods, he has not been seen on Attalia or in the heavens for a eons though. The Old Gods are rarely seen and when one does see fit to interfere with mortals they usually send an emissary of some form.   Next came the Gods of Continued Existence. They are the children of the Old Gods, they do not hold the raw celestial power of their parents however they are still not to be trifled with. They have been responsible for the creation of most of the living creatures on Attalia and are the patrons of many aspects of life. There are twelve known to the people of the world though this is not necessarily all existing as it is very possible some have simply never visited Attalia.   In a world where gods mingle frequently with their creations it is inevitable that relationships will develop between mortals and the gods. The results of this type of union are the final celestial level, The Mortal Gods. Do not let the name fool you, these individuals are extremely powerful and many are a match for the Gods of Continued Existence. As far as the people as Attalia know there are twenty Mortal Gods, however, there are many more unknown to the world as many choose to live normal lives and others ascend to the heavens never to return. The Mortal Gods are born to a physical form which they continue to live as until either their mortal body passes away or they choose to ascend to the celestial plane of their own volition. The Mortal Gods who have seen fit to take their place in the heavens among the pantheon find a place as a patron of some aspect of the world.   The truth is with so many deities and with the birth of new deities being a common event any attempt to catalogue and record the true number of celestial beings fell short or last track long ago. The mortal people of Attalia simply worship the gods they have grown up with or the gods they have experience of. In this way the gods have been a cause for many wars on Attalia as followers of different deities have clashed, the gods are not above interfering with these wars often getting involved personally, and indeed often fighting amongst themselves. As far as the religious scholars know it is not possible for a divine being to be destroyed and what mortals consider to be massive celestial battles are often petty squabbles in the relative eyes of the gods themselves. However, the mortal form a god takes when they visit the World is killable and when they are defeated it takes a long time for that god to return to Attalia.
