Kraken Statuette
This plaster statuette of the Kraken that Ends the World, was purchased from the designer by Tallboy Lucanetti of the Shireside Mob, and provided to Melvin Brown. Two of these statuettes were taken down into the basement of the Arkham Caine Museum of the Occult prior to the ritual that sparked the events of CASE 327. One of the figurines was smashed, releasing Don Pinto Cappoferro's pet Dweomercat, Polpetto. The other figurine carried Tam Taldrum into the museum unregistered.Properties
The accompanying alabaster key can attune a creature of the natural world (animal or magical beast) to the Kraken Statuette, allowing it to be concealed within the figurine as if under the effects of a Carry Companion spell.The base of the statuette bears runes in Aklo, a language of the fishfolk, wholly rejected by civilized society. A rough translation into the Common language of the UPC would be "Release Him", however the original Aklo is written in more flowery poetic grammar. Although the Aklo and its translation use the masculine form, the actual sex of the Kraken is a matter of scholarly debate.
CASE 327 (Object Reading)
Axel Webb conducted an Object Reading on the Kraken Statuette and later its accompanying key when he was investigating the museum basement in the aftermath of the ritual-gone-sideways. The following outlines the information he received:Object Reading (Kraken Statuette)
Magical Properties: Monstrous, powerful sea-dwelling tribes carve idols in the likeness of the Kraken, and this statuette is not only an imitation physically of one of these underwater statues, but its magic is also a weaker imitation of the magic from these more powerful underwater structures. The accompanying Alabaster Key can attune the statuette to a single creature of the natural world, allowing the creature to be transported undetected as if under the effects of a Carry Companion spell. If a willing volunteer speaks the right word (in this case, the Aklo "Release Him" that is carved into the base of the statuette), the hidden creature is ejected from the statue with the key ready to be attuned to the next creature.Historical Significance: The statuette was not crafted by Melvin himself, nor did Melvin buy it direct from the designer. Although it is unclear how it came to be in Melvin’s hands, a lingering psychic imprint of the person who did purchase the statuette from its creator reveals that it was purchased by Tallboy Lucanetti, the Shireside consigliere. It is unclear whether the original creator of the statuette knew the runic Aklo they were carving into the statuette's base, or whether they were simply copying the design from the original statue.
Most Recent Use: A brief flash of Melvin Brown himself, peering in panic at the eldritch runes on the statuette's base. He is sounding out, like a child reading a picture book, the word that activates the statue. An overwhelming sense of desperation floods the reading. Melvin is in over his head, and he knows it.
