Eldritch Monocle
Designed for uses by eldritch scholars, this magical monocle belonged to Whippoorwill Jaykrake. Before he died, Jaykrake was the day archivist at the Arkham Caine Museum of the Occult and had a licence to carry magical artifacts. This monocle, however, was part of his personal collection.
The monocle has limited historical significance. It was once displayed as part of the private collection of a prestigious school in Atramentum before the collection was removed from public view for reasons of propriety.
The last time the monocle was used by Jaykrake before he died was to take notes on occult texts, where he noted down the otherwise incendiary runes: "Genungagap" and "Skagarak". When it was found on his corpse at the Schlintz Motel, it had not been used within the last day. This indicated that, despite being posed to look like it, the book he'd been positioned reading (by OP) was not the cause of his death.
Properties
The monocle allows the wearer to decipher magical inscriptions, as per Read Magic. Wearing the monocle for 24 consecutive hours attunes it to the wearer, protecting them from anything that would ordinarily be dangerous to read or view. After that time, once per day, if the wearer attempts to read a sigil that would trigger a magical trap, the monocle lens clouds over, preventing the sigil from being used.
