Catalogist
In a world where everything is trying to kill you, it is good to know how various things intend to do so. Such crucial knowledge is gathered by Catalogists, people who train to survive in place where humanity gave up surviving.
You picked the path of loneliness.
People will not like you, because they will not see the fruit of your labor. You will most likely be long dead by the time the future Raiders will learn about the Ground below thanks to your work.
But rest assured, that we Planners are fully aware of the way the Catalogists contribute to the future of their people.-Planner to a newly appointed Catalogist
Description and the job
They focus on the ecosystem at large and how each species of monsters, beasts, animals, and flora affect each other.
Often they pick one of the species, and focus their entire attention on it, monitoring its behavior, hierarchy, strength, weaknesses, and mainly attack patterns and behavior in various combat situations.
They write down their observations, creating a well informed article to contribute the bestiaries of their Atocite. While the Catalogists have an important role, their pure non-combat orientation is scoffed upon by other Raiders and even differently focused Observants.
The labor of their work is often unappreciated because the information they gather is used mostly to teach Raiders of future generations. Their peers often encounter the monsters first hand while the Catalogists watch. This observation is considered dead weight by Raiders during the Raids.
Training and receiving of the profession
Because of how little the Catalogists get along with other Raiders, their training focus on survival, stealth, and various techniques which allow them to get out of dangerous situations without relying on combat.Instead of combat, the Catalogists rely on their knowledge of the environment, often preparing for and reacting to situations that could threaten them before they become too dangerous. Such Catalogist often cause small and subtle disruptions around themselves, to lure the predators away, toward different prey, or to lure larger predators in.
Only good and skilled Observants can become Catalogists, therefore they do have basic combat skills which dull over time as they don't use them.
"So we gonna fight and bleed, while you will watch from afar?" "Don't worry, I will not get in your way and I am more than able to take care of myself. But taking care of you is a different matter."-Dispute between frontline Raider and Catalogist.
Differences from other Raiders
The main difference between Catalogist and any other Raider is the approach to dangers and commissions.Raiders use various skills and abilities to hunt, fight and gather as much as possible to fulfill the commissions and help their Atocite survive and even prosper.
The Catalogist on the other hand uses their skills to gather information about various inhabitants of the Ground below without engaging in combat.
Instead of commissions they observe and prepare deep documentations and studies, completely free from any commissions, except when a new species evolve and information is needed about it. Raiders often use information created by Catalogists to seize an advantage over various monsters, to gather interesting materials, and even avoid unnecessary dangers. But they do so without being aware that this information needed to be prepared by the Catalogists.
