Dedwyd

Artist - Avant Choi - Artstation.com

"We were lost, travelling to the northern coast, to recover cargo from a ship that broke up on the rocks in the rough waters. The woodswalkers that guided us became disoriented in the fog, and we found ourselves in a part of the forest that had been dead for some time. As if a sickness plagued the very ground. None in our party knew where we were, so we kept moving north, in hopes of reaching the sea without finding danger.   What we found at the center of that dead forest was a massive oak tree, a hundred meters tall, with buildings clinging to its trunk like so many barnacles on a ship. The city seemed dead as well, except there were dim green light escaping the windows of these homes. We were as close as we dare venture, 'twas an evil place, we turned back almost running for a few miles, before we made our way north again."
- Kelig -Valsgardi Merchant Trader
The Alfir were the first sapient species to call the forests of Valsgard home. They claim themselves to be a race nearing on 20000 years old. Accounts are unsubstantiated, however they were known to be around at the time of the Kal people, and their civilization disappeared around 15000 years ago. The oldest and the largest of their cities was built in a grove of ancient trees in the northern forests of Valsgard.   There have been rumors of a Alfir city, that had been smote by the gods, but the location was not known to the Valsgardi. Alfir from other settlements, confirmed the existence of the first settlement, then known as Fyrstwyd. It was long believed to be a ruin, until Alfir expeditions to recover artifacts from the ruined settlement, suggested that life remained, however altered. The trees were dead, but the city was alive. The visiting alfir were unable to get close before being agressively attacked with arrows from above.   The expedition was abandoned, and the city became known as Dedwyd from that day forth. A place to be avoided, and forgotten, cursed by the gods.
