Black Fever

The Black Fever is a disease of the blood. A virus enters the bloodstream through the bite of the Ticia Mite. The Ticia Mite burrows into the skin of the patient, and feeds on the blood, and the saliva of the mite prevents the wound from healing, providing access to the blood flow.   The first symptoms of the Black Fever begin to show them selves between 5 and 10 days after the initial infection, however once they show, the Fever develops quickly.   Anyone is susceptible to the virus, however the stronger the individual, the less likely the Black Fever is to develop in severity.   If the patient survives the Black Fever they are immune to that strain of the virus, however should the virus change over time, their immunity will no longer apply to the new strains.

Transmission & Vectors

Bite of the Ticia Mite.       The virus responsible for the Black Fever lives in the salivary gland of the Ticia Mite.  It is transmitted into the subjects bloodstream when the Ticia Mite bites the subject and burrows into the skin to directly access the bloodstream.   The virus, once in the bloodstream, begins to break down the blood and lymphatic cells.

If the symptoms become severe before treatment begins, the patient has little chance of recovery.   Until recently there have been no successes in trying to treat a patient that has progressed that far.       The Eldblud Apotekari, Zawi, has developed a drought that has successfully remedied 2 patients whose symptoms were thought to be too far developed for treatment.   As of yet, she refuses to share the recipe of the tonic, in a selfish bid to win the loyalty of her patients, and weaken the position of the Empire's Seidrkin healers.

    Prognosis

If courses of treatment begin in the earliest stages of the sickness, the chances are very good that the patient will recover.   If treatment is lagging, even as little as overnight, the chances become much more grim.   Until the recipe of Zawi's drought is known to all, The Black Waste is a most fearsome condition.
