Komatzi's Restored Sword (koh-MAHT-zee)
Komatzi Rusastruth carries an old sword he found in a hedge as a child and restored with the help of his aunt, a blacksmith. He doesn't know where the sword came from or who previously owned it, but that just adds to the thing's mystique. It isn't beautiful in the slightest, in fact it's rather plain, but Mati doesn't care.

The sword has a hidden tang and a handle built specifically to fit in Komatzi's hand.
Manufacturing process
During the restoration process, Komatzi's aunt taught him simple techniques such as grinding to remove rust, basic reheating and reshaping using a hammer, retempering, and sharpening.
History
When Mati was around twelve years old, he found the sword while playing in a hedge with a group of other children. Luckily for his own safety, the sword was fairly dull and lacking any handle by that point. He immediately brought it home to show to his parents, thinking they would be just as amazed as he by his discovery. Sadly, the adults confiscated the thing, telling Komatzi he could have it back when he was older.
Mati never forgot about the sword. At that time, it was little more than a flattened piece of rusty metal, but something about it had captured Komatzi's imagination. During class, he daydreamed about using it to protect innocents, and every few years, he asked if his parents would finally give it back to him. They eventually relented once they felt he had enough common sense not to accidentally hurt himself or someone else with it.
Immediately after regaining possession of the sword, Mati asked his blacksmith aunt if she would be willing to help him restore it. She agreed and ultimately mentored him through the steps required to bring the sword back to its former state. Though it wouldn't be the path he'd ultimately follow, Mati showed aptitude toward blacksmithing and was able to restore the sword after some time spent hard at work. Once he set off on his adventuring career, it was one of two weapons he brought with him on his journey, including a small knife he keeps tucked in his waistband "just in case."
Significance
The sword is extremely important to Komatzi, not because of the way it looks, but because it's his primary method of protection for himself and the people he cares about.

Raw materials & Components
The sword is simply-made with a blade of iron and a handle of wood. The only decorative element it has is a plain bronze pommel cap. Due to a bad habit of grabbing the handle to use the sword as a blocker against certain attacks, Komatzi has wrapped parts of the blade with thick strips of cloth so he won't accidentally cut his hands.
