Twilight's Hammer

The Twighlight's Hammer is a ruthless mercenary organization that is based out of the Mercenary Confederation, and they take contracts all over the Shattered Lands.  They tend to favor protection and raiding contracts, but occasionally they will be employed for front line military action.  Lately, their business has taken them to the Dragon Fang Peninsula and the City of the Fallen.  The Hammer has taken a contract for the local duke and has been throwing their weight around in the surrounding villages as well.

Structure

The Twilight's Hammer stays true to its tribal roots and has a similarly organizational structure.  The group is broken up into war bands, that can act independently of each other, which are headed by a chief.  Some chiefs will be promoted to war chiefs who can take command of smaller bands for larger operations.  The whole mercenary company is headed by High Chieftan who is in charge of issuing contracts, keeping tabs on the smaller units, and managing the company resources.  In addition, the High Chieftan is the only one with the power to issue the call to arms and summon all the smaller bands together for one large military operation.

Culture

While the culture is steeped in military matters, the old tribal values still bleed through.  For instance, the only way warriors can rise through the ranks is if they exhibit the virtues of cunning, strength, and determination. While promotion by blood still occurs, chieftains are loathe to promote the unworthy since the soldiers are less likely to follow and trust the unproven.

Public Agenda

They wish to gain experience through combat, acquire wealth, and achieve true glory.  Their agenda does not go any deeper than that unless a particularly ambitious chieftain wishes to establish a little kingdom for him/herself.

History

The original Twilight's Hammer Clan was a band of orcs that had settled in the shattered lands after the initial invasion.  Their military prowess was without question, and over time they started to incorporate conquered peoples into the Twilight's Hammer in order to strengthen their numbers and flexibility. However, the clan was all but obliterated during the attempted reconquest of the 6th century, and they were forced to retreat inside the boarders of what is now the Mercenary Confederation.  They then remade themselves into a mercenary company that will take whatever job offered provided the coin is plentiful.

Demography and Population

Though the original tribe was a combination of orcs, human, and half-orcs, one can find members of all races within their ranks though high elves and gnomes tend to be pretty rare amongst them.

Territories

They have a piece of land inside the Mercenary Confederation where their official capital of Ombra is located, but, for the most part, the Hammers do not occupy anywhere for very long.  They keep their operations and their locations fluid so as to ensure security and survivability.

Military

The military is their life and livelihood.  The tribal system lends well t their small strike force system and hit and ru tactics.  Though, they are capable of gathering for pithed battles, they rarely do so as that would require the High Chieftain to call all the tribes together.   Their tactics favor an initial assault by archers and similar skirmishers before the close quarters warriors, usually swordsman and some spearmen rush in to finish off the enemy.

Religion

The organization does not have a patron religion, but there are many within its ranks that worship Kord, Moradin, and even Bane.  Those that worship Bane tend to stick together as they see it as their duty and right to conquer and rule over the people they are fighting, which is a sharp break with their usual MO.

Foreign Relations

Their relationships with other nations are in a constant state of flux, which is natural for a mercenary company.  They are friendly to whoever can pay their rates or whoever can shield them from harm.  The Desperate of Thrax is in a constant state of antipathy with the Hammers, and the Cydonians are none too happy with them either.

Legislative Body
The Du'Ma is the council of war chiefs that advise the High Chieftan.  This council is the closest analogue to a legislative body since sometimes they will pressure the High Chieftan into issuing certain commands to the various war bands.
Judicial Body
Each Chief functions as a judge for his war band, but if issues are too serious for them to handle alone, they will pass the decision along to one of higher rank.
Executive Body
The High Chieftan is the official head of state and he is advised by the Du'Ma, the council of war chiefs.
