Grung
Rainkin, Frogs of the Verdalis, Wyrmspine Stalkers.
Grungs are aggressive froglike humanoids found in rain forests and tropical jungles. They are fiercely territorial and see themselves as superior to most other creatures.
Grung society is a caste system. Each caste lays eggs in a separate hatching pool, and juvenile grungs join their caste upon emergence from the hatchery. All grungs are a dull greenish gray when they are born, but each individual takes on the color of its caste as it grows to adulthood. From lowest to highest caste, grungs can be green, blue, purple, red, orange, or gold.
All grungs secrete a substance that is harmless to them but poisonous to other creatures. A grung also uses venom to poison its weapons. Grungs are always on the lookout for creatures they can capture and enslave. Grungs use slaves for all manner of menial tasks, but mostly they just like bossing them around. Slaves are fed mildly poisoned food to keep them lethargic and compliant. A creature afflicted in this way over a long period of time becomes a shell of its former self and can be restored to normalcy only by magic. Being amphibious, grungs require water to live; any grung that fails to immerse itself in water for at least 1 hour during a day becomes quite exhausted.
Green grungs are the tribe's warriors, hunters, and laborers, and blue grungs work as artisans and in other domestic roles. Supervising and guiding both groups are the purple grungs, which serve as administrators and commanders. Red grungs are the tribe's scholars and magic users. They are superior to purple, blue, and green grungs and given proper respect even by grungs of higher status. Higher castes include orange grungs, which are elite warriors that have authority over all lesser grungs, and gold grungs, which hold the highest leadership positions. A tribe's sovereign is always a gold grung.
A grung normally remains in its caste for life. On rare occasions, an individual that distinguishes itself with great deeds can earn an invitation to join a higher caste. Through a combination of herbal tonics and ritual magic, an elevated grung changes color and is inducted into its new caste in the same way that a juvenile of the caste would be. From then on, the grung and its progeny are members of the higher caste.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Grungs are diminutive, froglike humanoids with smooth, permeable skin that secretes a toxic, mildly iridescent coating. Their limbs are long and muscular, with adhesive pads on their hands and feet that allow for effortless climbing and jumping.
Genetics and Reproduction
Grungs reproduce via egg-laying in caste-specific pools. Offspring undergo rapid metamorphosis, maturing within a year. Skin color indicates caste, determined by rituals and alchemical exposure. Genetic diversity is strictly managed within castes to preserve societal structure.
Ecology and Habitats
Grungs thrive in humid, tropical environments with abundant water sources. They require daily immersion in water to maintain their health. Highly territorial, they cultivate their surroundings, maintaining balance while defending resources fiercely. They interact with their environment through symbiotic practices, such as farming algae and managing predator-prey dynamics.
Behaviour
Grungs are hierarchical, ambitious, and pragmatic. Their caste system instills discipline and purpose, though it also fosters a culture of superiority. They value secrecy, often resorting to cunning strategies to outmaneuver intruders. Despite their stoic exterior, they form strong communal bonds within their caste.

Common Customs, Traditions and Rituals
Festival of Emergence
Celebrated by the Grung People of Ux'talu
The Festival of Emergence is a lively and vibrant celebration in Ux'talu, marking the Grung people's deep connection to their rainforest home and their unique lifecycle. The holiday, held annually at the height of the rainy season, celebrates the transformation and growth of Grung as they transition from their tadpole form to their adult state. It is a time to honor both their survival and their unity with the environment.
Morning:
At dawn, the Rain Chant begins. The Grung gather in the dense foliage surrounding Ux'talu, where the elders lead songs that call upon the spirits of the rain and the forest. These songs are said to coax the rains to pour down more heavily, encouraging the growth of the land and symbolizing the fertility of their people. Grung communities work together to construct intricate leaf shelters to protect their tadpoles, mimicking the nurturing role of the rainforest itself.
Midday:
At midday, the Emergence Ritual takes place. In the center of the village, pools of water are filled with lily pads and aquatic plants, representing the primordial waters from which all life emerges. Young Grung, nearing their adulthood, symbolically wade into the pools, reenacting their transformation from tadpole to their final form. As they emerge from the water, they are anointed with sacred dyes made from the vibrant colors of jungle plants, symbolizing their connection to the earth, water, and sky.
Afternoon:
After the ritual, the Jungle Feast begins. The Grung prepare an elaborate meal sourced entirely from their environment—wild fruits, insects, and harvested herbs from the rainforest. This feast celebrates the Grung's survival and their unique ability to adapt to their environment. The meal is communal, and Grung of all colors and castes share food as equals, fostering unity within their society.
Evening:
As the evening sets in, the Dance of Rebirth fills Ux'talu with rhythmic drums, croaking chants, and vibrant movements. Grung of all ages take part in the dance, which mimics the movement of the jungle's creatures and the flowing rivers of the Verdalis Basin. The Grung believe that through this dance, they are rejuvenating the forest and the island, ensuring the continual prosperity of Ux'talu.
Night:
The festival ends with the Luminous Journey, where the Grung light the rainforest with glowing bioluminescent fungi and fireflies. They embark on a silent walk through the heart of the island, offering prayers to the forest spirits, thanking them for their protection and sustenance. The shimmering lights of the journey are seen as a reflection of the inner glow of the Grung people, who, like their home, thrive in the vibrant depths of the rainforest.
The Festival of Emergence is not just a holiday but a celebration of life, transformation, and the bond between the Grung and the thriving rainforest of Ux'talu. It reinforces their connection to nature and to one another, marking the cyclical nature of growth and the power of unity within their secluded island home.
Common Taboos
- Failure to respect caste boundaries is met with exile.
- Polluting water sources is considered a dire offense.
- Direct physical aggression toward another grung outside ritual combat is forbidden.
History
The grung are a mystery in Astrium, with no recorded notion of their first discovery. They generally keep to themselves throughout Astriums history, with no known history and their own societies kept to themselves. Originally from a small lake just outside of Marblehaven, when it got destroyed 2 groups of Grung left travelling, one group travelled to the riparian wetlands where they stayed until they heard of a mysterious basin that opened up only very recently in 871.
The Basin - known as the Verdalis Basin, has a lush and tropical rainforest that was perfect for the Grung's biology. The other group moved along the enlightenedoverpass to the outskirts of Urdrus until a series of rivers spawned from Urdrus to Whitefield that appears very reminiscent in the shape of a dragon. The newly named Wyrmspine Gorge is misty and humid with water flowing in many different directions, sometimes going upstream, provided the grung with a place to have their new hatching pools in eddies that sit along the flow.
While the grung in Wyrmspine want to remain in solitude, the people in the basin have aspirations to ensure their peace of paradise doesn't get exploited - they have even gone to lengths to make a settlement called Vux'talu reflects the Grung people's connection to the vibrant and hidden nature of the rainforest, with "Vux" symbolizing mystery and seclusion, while "talu" hints at the harmony between the Grung and their lush, thriving environment. The name evokes a sense of a secretive yet flourishing community, deeply rooted in the dense tropical surroundings.
