Astral Travel

To enter the astral sea, the pilot of a spelljammer must spend a small amount of magical energy. This energy propels the ship into the astral sea, allowing it to travel between systems. Whereas a voyage at standard spelljamming speed to even a very nearby star would take years, doing the same through the astral plane usually takes a couple of days at the most.   The astral sea is constantly shifting, and although it is far easier to go from the astral sea to wildspace than the other way around, the hardest part is finding an area of the astral sea close to where you want to be. For this reason, travelling to anything but the most far-flung locations in the same system through the astral sea is generally inefficient - any who try will likely end up farther away than they started. The longest part of most spelljammer voyages is travelling through wildspace from wherever in the desired system the vessel got dropped by the whims of the astral sea.
