The Elder Families
The Elder Families are made up of 5 families that descend from those that started the Coalition so many years ago, known now as the Family Leaders. Each family specializes in a certain type of magic, and just being a descendant of a Family Leader gives someone tremendous power.
The 5 families are the Cadwelds, who specialize in starfire and are identifiable by their bodily hair resembling or being fire. The Vaschules specialize in blood and shadow manipulation, and resemble vampires of old or drow in appearance. They also house the secret Void rune, only passed down to firstborn direct descendants. The Broekhovens specialize in water manipulation, and have an extremely dominant gene that makes all descendants be born as water genassi, with various coral growths all over their bodies. The Starvinzkis specialize in electric and metal manipulation, because of this, they have an extreme monopoly in the space vessel industry. Those who inherit the electric powers can be identified by golden hair and eyes, those who inherit the metal manipulation tend to be born as steel genassi. Those born with neither look extremely plain, and cannot be identified as Starvinzkis, while those born with both powers are born with limbs or organs replaced with steel and electronics. Finally, the Castelles, who specialize in food-based rune weaving, and are identifiable by their extremely curly bodily hair.
The Elder Families are extremely interwoven into the Coalition and the Navy, with most direct descendants joining the Main Forces, and working their way up into Admirals, Navarchs, and eventually some of them make it up to the rank of Elder, leading the entire Coalition with their influence.
