Mental Implants

Mental implants are extremely common in the universe, so much so that it's notable when someone doesn't possess them, and they're commonly referred to as just 'implants' by people. These implants are integrated into the brain and often extend into the nervous system as well.
Functionally, basic mental implants grant data storage to their users and short-ranged wireless communication including access to datanets. Higher tiers allow the users to 'dive' into virtual worlds, potentially even experiencing them as though they were reality, extended range of communications, sensory amplification, mental shielding, integration with equipment designed for wireless control, skill training, and nervous system optimization.
Most mental implants beyond the basic tiers include enchantments to reduce complications and improve reliability. Generally speaking, an integrated implant has a wireless communication range of one hundred meters multiplied by its tier, but most users link it to a dedicated comm (i.e. armor integrated, handheld, facility, or starship) which means that this is rarely applicable.
Mental implants come in eight known tiers, though it's rumored that there are more powerful versions as well. The higher the tier number, the more capable the implant. There are a few benchmarks for certain functionality, however.
    • Tier 1 — The basic form of implants, almost anyone can get them. Internal interactions with the implants are minimal, and mostly the user needs to project them into another system to use them fully. About 100 mythrite baseline. Using a building dive system with this tier allows the user to dive into virtual worlds or games.
    • Tier 2 — Allows the user to project information from the implants onto their vision. Required for a control chip to take hold of the user's actions. Control chips are notably banned in most polities, as they're used almost exclusively for slavery.
    • Tier 3 — Allows the use of basic training chips, generally the ones that help train reflexes, but not knowledge.
    • Tier 4 — Allows the user to dive into virtual worlds with high fidelity, can use skill training chips which imprint knowledge into the user's mind. Using chips that haven't been thoroughly accredited is not recommended.
    • Tier 5 — Can provide basic sensory amplification.
    • Tier 6 — Can provide some nervous system optimization, allowing faster reaction speed.
    • Tier 7 — Can provide a degree of mental shielding to the user, fighting mind control effects.
    • Tier 8+ — Unknown.
