II - Rift of an Era
“Moreta’s Rift”, the one and only phenomenon that brought upon the galaxy an era of magic and arcane knowledge. Little is known about the Rift itself, but discoveries are made every day concerning the “energy” it expels, mana as they call it. The arrival of said energy pretty much stirred up the hornet’s nest that is the Milky Way, this was followed by the birth of mages who could practice a phenomena called Magic through the usage of an ethereal organ named Mana Syphon. During the first 19 years of the era of magic, mages were beyond rare, they were considered prime resources that would lead civilizations beyond the limitations of technology. As the mana spread through the entire galaxy, way beyond the Moreta Quadrant, mages were now more common and categories were created to classify them (See Low-Tier Attribute Tree). In due time, magic became a part of the everyday life of many people, granted, there are a few that consider magic as something foul or unnatural. In response to many discoveries in the domain of the arcane, Varkain Laboratories decided to launch an expedition to the Rift in order to harness its power. The entire mission was a catastrophic failure, Varkain lost 80% of the ships that were sent and thousands of individuals died in the coldness of space. What caused such a monstrous failure is the Rift itself, simply by being close to is enough to destroy entire ships due to the high density mana pulsations gushing out of it. After 2 expeditions considered as disasters, Varkain decided to simply monitor the Rift from a safe distance in hope to eventually harness its energy one day. This job was given to monitoring teams aboard mobile stations, the latter eventually started receiving strange signals from shattered planets within the sector. The signals seemed to “respond” to the Rift’s pulsations. That fact alone intrigued Varkain, however, rather than investigate head first, Varkain Labs. chose the sensible option to prepare their ships and crew with magically-created shields in hope that the new expedition to uncover the secrets of those signals will not be as brutal and merciless as the last two to the Rift.
