4.4 - Saturnian / Thaumoth

¤ Characteristics = The Saturnians and their Thaumoth brethren belong to the few species that can naturally fly. Their wing powder acts as a powerful drug to most races and is usually used in alchemy as a catalyst for stronger toxins. Both subspecies have compound eyes and possess excellent eyesight, the Thaumoths also have the ability to see well in the dark, whereas the Saturnians can tolerate direct eye contact with a star’s light rays. Saturnians have a strong aptitude for magic and have the highest percentage of Touched people in the Quadrant (Doc. Vaibla-Il : “Touched, as in, magically Touched. The Wave impacted the Saturnians a lot, reinforcing their magical society as they no longer depended on their crystals to power lights and other installations !”). The Thaumoths on the other hand, have a stronger physical aptitude than the Saturnians and are excellent assassins, moreover, the Wave also allowed them to wield magic. Granted, it is not as phenomenal as the Saturnians’ magical prowess, but it is still a decent bonus nonetheless. Some scientists have recorded that the two subspecies have a strange resilience towards Dark/Death magic, in comparison to their weakness against fire in general as well as toxins stronger than their wing powder. Thaumoths live for the same amount of time as a human, however, Saturnians live for around 200 years, both of them are herbivores and prefer sugary food (Doc. Vaibla-Il : “I guess Humans aren’t the only species with a sweet tooth !”).

¤ Origins = Those two subspecies both originate from an impressively large Gas Giant named “Carnalia” within the Wartan System, they both lived together but the Thaumoths were back then considered as inferior to the Saturnians due to their physiological differences, this led to the enslavement of the Thaumoths by the Saturnians. Eventually, a war for the freedom of the Thaumoths was fought, even some Saturnians joined the side of the Thaumoths. The outcome of the war was a bloody victory for the Thaumoths, and as the years passed, the two subspecies became two sides of the same coin and achieved true equality.

¤ Situation = In this day and age, the Saturnians and Thaumoths who used to keep to themselves are opening up to the Galaxy. However, the corporations like Varkain Corp are still not considered as trustworthy, this point of view is mostly due to their heritage (Mana Crystals) and their government, a democracy that appears to adopt a few reforms considering the importance of magic as a political "resource" in society starting with the capital city of Solalei as its main governmental powerhouse. Aside from their political stance, both Saturnians and Thaumoths seem to have a distaste of the Arachne, it is unclear as to why such a tension exists between those species.

¤ Specialty = Saturnians have great skills in both Chemistry and Alchemy. Their wand making method is unfortunately outdated and has been surpassed by Varkain Corp. The Thaumoths, on the other hand, are exceptionally adept at cutting Mana Crystals in order to make them into Magic Bows and Magic Scythes (The Thaumoths’ weapons of choice). Aside from this, they both use the same ships, a newly developed kind that uses Mana as fuel and is highly efficient for exploring.
