Pit Plants

General Info

Found exclusively in the colder northern climates, pit plants are a deadly carniverous plant. Thought to be related to Mantraps, these plants grow down into the ground, essentially burrowing a hole that it fills. It is thought that the plant manages to stay warm in extreme cold climates primarily through this downward growth. Over time, snow will naturally cover these plants, creating a perfect trap for passing creatures. When something heavy enough to break the snow walks over it, it falls into the pit plant and is typically trapped there by the sticky interior of the plant. The plant will also tightly close around any prey that falls in, causing escape to be unlikely in the case of fully falling into one.

Thorough Description and Effective Counters

Pit Plants are typically difficult to spot out in the open, but in case you should be lucky enough to spot one in your path it is quite easily identifiable by the white edge and purple interior circle the entrance makes. The flesh of the plant can vary in texture due to being the only part of the plant constantly exposed, but they tend to be slightly waxy or even a bit sticky. When digesting its food, some will occasionally realease "burps" due to pressure buildup from larger prey decomposing. These "burps" are typically silent, but are easily identifiable due to carrying the smell of death. Seasoned and sharpeyed adventurers may be able to identify smalls dips in the surface of the snow that could signal the existance of a pit plant.   The sticky inner lining is a type of strong acid. If injured from one of these, no special healing, antitoxin, or curse prevention should be necessary. When travelling with someone who gets caught in a pit plant, two methods are known to be an effective method to have the plant relieve its prey. If one is drawn to magics or tinkering, electricity should cause the prey receptors to die in the plant which would cause it to release its grip. Fire will not affect the plant quite as well as other elements, as the waxy covering of the inside of the plant is fire resistant. In the case of a strength based solution, one can attempt to pull the pit plant from the ground, which should gravely damage and sometimes outright kill the plant. Please note that while these will both loosen the grip on anything or anyone in the pit plant, they will still be getting hurt from the acid inside of the plant and their removal should be your top priority.
