Elves

Name: Elves   Deity: Prospera mainly, and other deities    Lifespan: 800-1000 years   Procreation: Sexual reproduction   Organization: Communal living. They typically organize themselves along lines of where their magic focus is.   Language: They have several dialects, usually divided upon magical focus.   Appearance: Most noticeably they have elongated, pointy ears. Otherwise, they vary widely in appearance, from skin tone, hair color, height, and body size (though few are thickly, overly muscled).   Strengths:
  • Long lived
  • All of them have basic magic: lighting fires/candles, a natural knack for growing things, minor accelerated healing, etc.
  • Enhanced senses
  Weaknesses:
  • Weak to their opposing magical focus
  • Loud noises, bright lights, etc can harm their enhanced senses
  • Low birthrate when compared to their human counterparts
  • They are not immortal, and a wound can kill them as much as old age can
  • Prone to digestive ailments, especially if they do not experiment with different cuisines
History: There was a time when they were nearly dead, their numbers in the low hundreds and death seemed inevitable. Their low birth rates did not help, but they learned that if they fought together, if they moved as one, without being one, they might survive. It was a coordinated effort: find safety, have children, keep them safe. Their numbers rose, one by one, and once extinction no longer seemed like a guarantee, old divisions came back to the fore.   As they grew, divide rose after divide, with eventually their winged cousins splitting off entirely to live on their island, far from them, with their hatred of dragons.   Their skirmishes were many, until one came, nearly 5400 years ago. One by one she led the water elves through alliances, occasionally the threat of war until all the elven clans were united under one banner, and one Queen. Not all approved, but there were few other options and there was something about uniting, some magic that they could not create when separated that they could do when they were together.   And those that had always protected their families and their clans, kept on protecting them. They started to move together again, and under her they became an army, capable not only of wielding magic, but wielding magic together.   One by one the kinfolk of Marē came together. Their next queen continued with the tradition, tirelessly arranging alliance after alliance, but the proof was in them.   It was something that continued all the way through Queen Sikys.   The Nameless War brought with it challenges, and in its wake, truth.  May expected them to be prissy and stiff, but they are in fact ribald, fearsome warriors, and gifted mages. It was from them that the Houses of Andorian, warriors, and the House of Daemona, magic, took their cues from to merge into one single house.    Like many other Marēns, they found it difficult to be within four walls, but many of them did rejoin their friends and lost family members on the Terran side.    Societal norms/mores: Where their winged counterparts have arranged themselves according to job, their main division is on the basis of magic.   They all have a ceremony which bequeaths a special title upon them if they complete it successfully. Depending upon their magic focus, they are identified differently, and the requirements vary, but there is one universal truth: the trial is meant to test both their abilities with magic, and their control over it. Many will spend decades, if not centuries preparing for the trials.
  • Air: Spiral Dancers - They summon and control a tornado, and have to survive within it.
  • Earth: Star Shatterers - They must create and control an earthquake, and build stable structures with the loosened stone; or they must summon and control plantlife to form it into a stable, usable structure.
  • Fire: Trail Blazers - They must alter a wildfire into a back burning, controlled burn in Phaea's Forest (made of towering, giant sequoias) without the fire damaging surrounding structures and vegetation.
  • Water: Tide Riders - They must summon towering waves (50 ft+) and disperse them before they do any damage to the shoreline, or summon a whirlpool that stretches to the bottom of the sea.
  • Light: (open)
  • Shadow: (open)
  • Blood: (open)
  • Body: (open)
  • Mind: (open)
Some elves bearing these titles can work together to create joint elemental phenomena such as: firestorms (air+fire), raining fire (fire+water), water tornadoes (air+water) or mudslides (earth+water).   Nearly all serve at some point in the Marē army. Some serve for the minimum requirements of 12 years, but most make a career out of it.   Once a month, they disappear into the nearest forest to relieve themselves. The stones left behind are widely believed by other races to be magical gems, and are highly valued.
