Avariel
Name: Winged elves (Avariel)
Deity: They worship the elven deity of nature Faeluna
Lifespan: 250-450 years
Procreation: tab a, slot b, but very low birthrates, to have one child is a blessing, most go their lives without giving birth
Organization: They keep to their Island, with one ruler of the war caste, one of the scholar, and one of the tender, to oversea the running of the society. Young are sent to schools of all three for a minimum of five years to determine which they should devote their life to. There are smaller family units as well as smaller cities, and a sense of community and togetherness drives them to be the best they can, otherwise they would likely die out. The speices has been on the decline as birthrates are so low.
Language: elven, and a sign language using their wings and hands, typically used in flight
Appearance: All genders stand between 5’ and 5’8”, larger eyes, pointed ears, and the most distinguishing feature, feathered wings. They can come in any range of colors naturally, and they also have feather dyes if you wish to change the look. Skin tones range from the palest white to darkest ebony, and anything in between. Hair colors can match wings or be different.
Strengths: Flight and aerial combat, quick, resistant to temperature extremes, resistant to mind altering magics, magical abilities for scholars(typically weather/nature related) and tenders(growing/healing), physical prowess and martial abilities for war caste, speak with birds, family bonds
Weaknesses: Hollow bones- easy to break when hit/hard to heal, not strong-can’t weigh too much else you can’t fly, Dragon fire vulnerability. Iron vulnerability, claustrophobic(being confined can cause mental distress)
History: A war with the dragons raged for centuries until a tentative peace was brokered a few hundred years ago under the guidance of the Queen of Mare. The Avariel were to keep to their island, and the dragons to their area, but memories faded after a few generations and now more from both sides are exploring the world around them, and a new conflict may be inevitable
Societal norms/mores:
Three castes, War, scholar, tender. Some intermingling but mainly you keep to your own once your path has been set.
As there are rarely children born, same sex and poly relationships are common, especially when raising a child.
You can mate for life, or have sex whith any willing partners without anyone looking askance. Weapons are made of stone or glass and wood, forging metals is related to softer ones like copper and gold.
Clothing is typically draped cloth or leather, lightweight and won’t interfere with wings.
The volcanic island nation where they live has various mini climates, some jungle, some mountains, and commerce between the various peoples is active
Aerial combat can be with bows and arrows, spears tipped with stone or glass, or drive bys with swords and scimitars.
To surrender is dishonorable, and most in battle would rather be slain than be taken captive.
War caste are the fighters, guards, protectors of the island, they are also the hunters. After decades of training, they are able to call upon a deep well of power within them to accomplish extraordinary martial feats that would seem impossible to most
Scholar caste is devoted to learning about things, usually magic, but religion and history are also favorite study subjects. Magic is studied for decades to learn the intricacies of casting magics, and typically they are weather/elemental/nature related in their application.
Tender caste is the most important, and they are the ones who look after the supply of food for everyone, and also provide medical assistance. Each family unit with a child should have at least one tender to ensure that the child survives to adulthood. Tenders know magic related to growth of plants, water summoning, healing, and other potentially related spells.
