Tyrfing

Tyrfing is the famed sword of legend and myth originating from somewhere in northern parts of Dol Teroth, most likely Hyggelanda region. Its story tells of a powerful enchanted blade that bears a terrible curse and always spells demise for its owner. Nevertheless, the power and prestige of this weapon make it a highly sought after artefact that has claimed countless lives over the centuries.

The Myth

There once was a king named Svarflam who ruled over all of Hyggelanda region and beyond. He commanded the winds and the waves, and many kingdoms bowed to him, both of men and other races. Once, he was riding through mountains of his region, when a bird landed on his shoulder and whispered to him that two invisible dwarves were hiding around the next bend, disguised as rocks. The king was a proud man and couldn't understand why these dwarves would deny him the privilege of hailing him, so he decided to capture them.

These dwarves were famous blacksmiths Dvarin and Dulinn, and once the king broke their invisibility spell they pleaded for their lives by offering to make a weapon for the king that would never rust nor break, and that would cut through iron and stone as easily as hot steel through snow, and it would always bring him victory whenever he brought it into battle. The king agreed to release the dwarves after they made him such a weapon, and not a moment sooner.

For three days and three nights Dvarin and Dulinn toiled under the king's watchful gaze. Yet every night around midnight, the king would doze off for a few moments. And every time Svarflam nodded off, the dwarves imbued a curse upon the sword. Three curses were thus placed upon the weapon before it was finished. The first curse deemed that the sword must spill blood every time it was removed from its scabbard or brandished in hand. The second curse deemed that every owner would commit three evil deeds despite themselves while owning the sword. And the third curse deemed that the sword would be the owner's own undoing.

The dwarves presented the sword to king Svarflam. It was a splendid blade, with a golden pommel and a golden hilt, exquisitely decorated, gleaming like the sun, and imbued with runes that beamed with magic. The king was satisfied and the blade was named Tyrfing. As the dwarves were released, they giggled and chuckled and told Svarflam of the curses placed upon the blade now that he held it in his hand. The king was so enraged that he swung the weapon in a savage downward stab at the giggling dwarves, who used their magic to swap places with a nearby rock. As promised, Tyrfing stabbed through the rock, embedding itself deep in it, causing Svarflam to lose his balance and fall to his death.

The dwarves left the blade there to be found and had returned to their kingdom, while that same cloven rock sprouted a stream of water that became a waterfall known as Svarflam's Fall. Meanwhile, Tyrfing remained embedded in it until the next person finds it to spread its curse.

History

Tyrfing does indeed exist and is as powerful and as dangerous as the legends speak. The sword matching its description and attributes has cut a bloody swathe through the history of the region, always utilized in the hands of a mighty warrior. It left a wake of bloodshed and misery behind it until its curses were fulfilled and its owner lay slain or dead by some stroke of misfortune. No attempts to remove the curses have proven successful, and the sword rose and fell through history, disappearing at times, only to resurface and spread agony and anguish once again in a new generation of warriors.
