Stout Halflings

"Of course I drank it! Why? Oh... oh, it was the wrong bottle. Well, in one way, out another, my pa' used to say..."
— Garlan Whisperbrook

While halflings sought their place in their new world, some saw the newfound racial diversity as a boon and an invitation to abandon their old ways and look for a new life among those other races. They joined the melting pot communities and were soon taken in by urban living. Over time, their outlooks and traditions changed, and they became distinct from their hobbit brethren. They came to call themselves the Stouts, in celebration of their choice to venture blindly into a new life. These halflings became synonymous with city life, with taverns and docks and shops, with alley ways and cobblestone streets. These halflings were the erudites, the rascals, the minstrels, the bureaucrats, and everything in between.

While they left many of their old traditions behind, they never relinquished their old values. Companionship and friendship were always their motivation, and excellence in what they do was still their drive. It simply became the matter of channeling those values into new avenues of development. Small communes of stouts developed around those ideals and soon enough every mixed town and city worth their salt had one. They are said to know every nook and cranny of their city, and if you're looking for directions, look no further than the closest stout. Especially when bar-diving - they have sampled every tavern and every inn, and tried every brew... and have been kicked out for criticizing the brewer more times than not.
