Hoydar Dwarves

"Finest dwarven craftsmenship and that's no lie! Now let's talk business and make some coin, ye and I."
— Hvirst the Fat

While dwarves were united, many of them were content to stay within their mountain strongholds. As time passed wanderlust and need for change and variety drove whole clans to push out from their satellite settlements and meet other races of the wide world. Soon enough, trade begun to flourish and new settlements were built. As a result, many of those dwarf pioneers started living on lower and lower altitudes, and furthermore begun mingling among the other races, with diplomacy, commerce, and cultural growth making everyone richer and better. As time passed, these dwarves changed too, and became a distinct branch - the Hoydar, as they came to be known. Their name means "Hill folk" or "Hill-dwellers" in dwarvish tongue, signifying their connection with the people from outside the mountains.

The Hoydar have also changed physically over time. They have grown slightly taller over the centuries, but the rich foods of the lowlands and more leisurely life had also made them more prone to being rotund or paunchy. They value physical appearance more than the average mountain dwarf, which they love to show through their beard and hair, garments and jewelry. It is common for the Hoydar to learn several languages throughout their lives, especially if their trade brings them in contact with many different races. Many a caravan has been saved by a Hoydar talking down a group of belligerent Lizardfolk in their own hissing vernacular, to the awe of both parties.

Basic Information

Anatomy

With their comparatively more comfortable living conditions, the Hoydar are often more prone to developing a stouter or paunchy physique than other dwarves. However, only a fool would underestimate any of Forgefather's children, and so the Hoydar are still as strong and resilient as many other dwarves.

Ecology and Habitats

Able to live in a multitude of surface environments, the Hoydar are perhaps the most adaptable members of dwarvenkind. Furthermore, they are the most sociable, with their history based on the need of other dwarves to trade with other races, therefore having most of them mingling and rubbing shoulders with members of many different species. With that in mind, the Hoydar are perhaps the most widespread of dwarves and can be found in many varied settlements across Asphodel.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

With centuries spent living on the surface, the Hoydar have become more accustomed to living on sunlight, while still retaining their dwarven nightvision heritage.
