Hobbit Halflings

"My, you're soaking wet! Put down that sword and come inside. There's stew to warm you right up."
— Agatha Longburrow

Halfling traditions reach back for centuries and way back to their old world. Not much has changed in their way of life, and they prefer to keep it that way. Coming to Apshodel, some halflings have decided to take a more active role in diverse racial communities, and those who have remained true to their origins have been dubbed Hobbits. They are the simple, rural folk, those that embody the archetypal halfling spirit. Brave, yet non-confrontational, Hobbits excel in comfortable living and artisanship. Their penchant and dedication are able to morph simple acts of rustic living into an art form that rivals those that are traditionally considered as such. Most of them are humble about it, brushing it off as "just something that we do", though there are certainly many competitive ones among them.

Hand in hand with their way of life, comes their simple dependency on nature and natural occurrences. They live in tune with their surroundings, exploiting them in a manner in which both sides benefit. Their deities are almost universally nature-based spirits in form and function, and are connected to the seasons, cycles, weather, and land. As such, other races view the hobbits with benevolence, acting as their de facto guardians wherever they are found, because in that way both sides usually thrive and benefit. For their part, hobbits are happy to trade and barter for their goods, and nurture their communities as their ancestors have done before them.

Basic Information

Ecology and Habitats

Hobbits prefer the countryside, especially looking for perfect conditions that include: fertile lands, low gentle hills, woods nearby, brooks or rivers. This way, they aim to optimize their produce by using the natural resources for their own benefit. Of course, such perfect conditions are rare, so the hobbits make do with what's at hand and safe enough, inhabiting a variety of at least similar areas of the land.

Dietary Needs and Habits

"A hobbit would eat anything!" is a saying common in some parts of Asphodel, but is not necessarily true. In fact, hobbits are probably the pickiest of eaters when it comes to the quality of produce before them. They are the ultimate gourmet connoisseurs and food and beverage critics, and with good reason. Their food is always hearty and plentiful, and most importantly delicious given how simple most of their ingredients tend to be.
