Personal history

Born the first child of minor nobility, Guiscard spent his formative years in the apprenticeship of his father Philip who groomed him for inheriting the family estate. However, Guiscard’s mother Jinai claimed to have received divine knowledge regarding Guiscard, that she and Philip were to raise him for service to Elyon. Philip was unwilling to let his fortunes go without an heir, unless Jinai could give another son. Jinai conceived a second child, a daughter, and so she gave in to her husband’s wish and Guiscard remained.   A month later, Jinai became pregnant with a third child, but this time she told Philip that the Voice had returned to her, angry that she had disobeyed. The Voice said she would be given another son, but he too must follow his brother in Elyon’s service. Philip again refused, and when Jinai fell ill with a strange and incurable disease, both parents thought it was Elyon’s anger they wrought against themselves. Philip went into mourning, and Jinai took her two sons to the Order of the Martyr. She passed away a week later.   Guiscard has never forgotten his mother’s sacrifice, and so lives by the Rule of the Order daily. His younger brother Baldwin did not achieve full knighthood. In fact, their relationship became bitter, for Guiscard graduated the ranks and became an Initiate Trainer. Both brothers suspected Baldwin would never pass his initiation trial into the Borax Uldek, but Baldwin counted on the fact that Guiscard was overseeing the event and would look after him. Guiscard was unable to, for so desperate was the Order for men of fine service that Guiscard was called to serve elsewhere. Baldwin began his trial under a new Trainer, failed, and abandoned the Order out of rage for his brother’s betrayal.   Accompanying Guiscard on his journey is his teenage squire Nopre’om, who was found abandoned as an infant on the steps of a monastery. From the beginning he has been harboring conflict of whether or not she should remain his squire, for her purple eyes and strange ethnicity marked her as “alt-human”. To this day he has been unable to find any tribe or nation of matching heritage. But he was convinced by the divinity of the situation, for on the same night he was reminiscing over his failed brother and prayed to his mother to ask Elyon to grant him another chance. As he exited the monastery he nearly stumbled over the infant lying in the rain.

Employment

Knight of the Order of the Martyr; Former Initiate Trainer.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Greatest Success: Graduation as a Knight. A personal success was gaining Nopre’om as his squire.

Failures & Embarrassments

Greatest Failure: Not being there for his brother Baldwin.

Mental Trauma

Biggest Formative Memories: He took personal responsibility over the death of his mother, and over his duties. Stepping out of the Borax Uldek was among the greatest days of his life, when Elyon, his brothers, and his mother were all proud of him.

Personality Characteristics

Likes & Dislikes

Likes: Obedient recruits; dried beef; seeing others achieve (what he thinks they should be achieving in life)   Dislikes: Disobedience, arrogance, rebelliousness or people unwilling to accept consequences. Also dislikes rain.

Virtues & Personality perks

Strengths: Is willing to face danger. He is uncompromising.   Loyalties: Order of the Martyrs

Vices & Personality flaws

Fears: A future without the Order. Failing Squire as a teacher. Also, breaking the rules of the Order, because that would place him outside the grace of Elyon.   Weaknesses: He is uncompromising.   Character Flaws: Believes it would be better for everyman to embrace Vachelous culture. He maintains much of the flaws of his Order, who claim they are God’s most humble and obedient servants, but are rigorous and unwilling to alter their doctrines. His travels with the Order have made him more open-minded towards non-humans compared to the average Vachelian, but he wouldn’t trust his or his squire’s life with one.

Personality Quirks

Finds the progress of others humorous. Tends to be patient, except when a brother in arms is endangered. Never eats beef touched by a non-human. Treats his squire like a child when surrounded by strangers.   His morning and evening routine consist of journaling past events, and cleaning gear.

Religious Views

Religion Name: Diematism (pronounced dee-mah-tism)   Beliefs about the Existence of God: Elyon is a God of the Heavens and is distant from the earth except through His servants and the Natural Order of the world. He is searching from above for those who will unapologetically conform to His will. The Pale is Elyon’s mortal enemy who must be vanquished and those he tries to harm protected.   Beliefs about the Character of God: He once believed in the severity of Elyon, His need for surefooted soldiers who never make exceptions.   Beliefs about the Work of God: He maintains the Order’s doctrine that the suffering of a person is Elyon communicating the flaws in the ones he loves. A person enduring hardship is only to receive the most basic aid and should never be given sympathy or deliverance, or else a man will never choose to better himself by adopting Elyon’s path for them (a.k.a the rule of the Order).

Hobbies & Pets

Tournaments, Chess, Cooking.
