The sight of Pale put it all together. That ghostly mask whirled about in Tovian’t mind, speaking to him. The taunting voice haunted Tovian, but he hadn't known why until now. The eerie figures that he had been fighting for the last few moons had weakened his mental strength, his will to fight back.
Whether it was Pale himself or some minion of Pale’s in Tovian’s memory, he couldn’t tell. But now his dark past and the evil that he had done came back to him. Tovian had seen some evil being of the likeness of Pale centuries ago but he had tried to put that behind him.
In the torch lit halls of the fortress in Torria the echo of drums boomed through its chambers. Orders were given to open the gate, and the bolts were unfastened. As the iron gates swung open, a scour of men carried in a curtened chair. Once the men left, the black veils were drawn back and a shadowed figure stepped forward. Me and my fellow assassins were given orders and we blindly carried them out. Me didn’t question the agent of pale, we did his bidding. We conquered, captured, and killed for him.
Gripping his swords in pain, he writhed in pain as Donindor and Pale clashed in battle, and Tovian’s mental and physical capacities were breached. Pale wanted him back. As the fight continued, the pain endured, and the battle in Tovian’s head persisted. Finally Tovian’s strength gave out and he felt like an empty vessel with the outcome of his life depending on the battle at hand. Blows from both wizards resonated in Tovian’s mind until Pale’s grip on his mind slackened. It felt as if Pale was being sucked away, and Tovian was finally able to open his eyes to prove to himself that Pale was indeed being sucked away.
Once Tovian had fully regained consciousness, he understood that Pale had not been defeated, but he had only been relocated. This wouldn’t suffice. If Pale was in Ashnew than Tovian’s ken would be vulnerable targets. Tovian couldn’t wait for Pale to wage his next war on them, Tovian had to act first if he wanted to save his friends.
