Volcana Woods

Not many are willing to go deeply into the Volcana Woods, though some of the oldest inhabitants of the continent may still remember it as the Gnarled Woods. What used to be a glorious, unconquered expanse of ancient, oaken forest was forever warped by the return of the Kingdom of Rhadell. The Conjuration magic used to return the people of Rhadell back to Ashirma reverberated throughout the Planes, disturbing and thinning the barriers between them and allowing all manner of things into the Material Plane. There is uncertainty as to why the magic succeeded in such a catastrophic way; Reasons range from the scope of the teleportation attempt to questioning the arcane ability of the involved mages. Regardless, the people of Rhadell won't tell from atop their floating Kingdom, and the Volcana Woods remains the site of pure magical chaos.   Portals to Planes and Demiplanes-both known and unknown-open and close at random. The only consistent feature of the region is its trees, and even those have shifted from just ancient oaks to a colorful variety of evergreen, deciduous, and unknown species of flora and fauna from alien environments. Thanks to Volcana's location as a natural barrier between Nations, the otherworldly entities that leak out may find their way across the continent. Elementals, Demons, Devils, Fey, and much worse stumble through rifts into the Volcana Woods and find plenty of opportunity to sow mayhem. Others may assimilate, making new family and friends within the thousands of settlements to be found in Ashirma. A Githzerai monk found establishing a new monastery in the Meriweather Plains? Likely blown in from Limbo through a rift in Volcana. Star Spawn sacrificing an entire town of people to herald the arrival of the Red Moon? If cultists didn't summon them, then one can reasonably ascertain that they arrived from Volcana.   Even though the region has a well-established reputation for being unpredictably dangerous and fraught to travel through, certain sects of beings have made a home of the Volcana Woods. Hags find the potential for new travelers quite the feast, for in desperation to find their way back home, they may take on a tragic deal. Other sects have even learned a measure of predictability to the chaotic Rifts, using them to travel to and fro certain areas-though not without immense risk should a miscalculation occur. This includes Astral Elves, Forest Gnomes, Gith, and few others.
