Hydrus
The hydrus is a small, semi-aquatic lizard with well-developed forelegs but no hind legs. Just over a foot in length on average, the diminutive scavenger has the macabre habit of burrowing into fresh corpses to feed on the soft innards. Anyone disturbing the carcass may find the sharp-toothed little reptile bursting from the corpse's belly or mouth to make its escape, giving rise to the myth that they eat their way out of predators after being swallowed.
Despite only having two legs, the hydrus is a swift runner and able swimmer, and dwells along riverbanks in warm climates. Its trilling territorial cries are often mistaken for those of a frog or insect.
