Basileus
Often referred to as the 'sea serpent', the basileus is an enormous aquatic reptile known to prey on seals, sharks, and the occasional shipwrecked sailor. Measuring upwards of a hundred feet long, with a head the size of an ox, basilei are widely feared as maneaters by mariners, and fearful tavern tales whisper of entire ships being dragged beneath the waves by these monsters.
In truth, the basileus is generally content to feed on large fish and aquatic mammals, and only preys on lone humans when the opportunity is too good to pass up; there are no reliable accounts on record of one actually attacking a vessel. Though its body is shaped much like that of a snake, the great reptile possesses a pair of large flippers at the base of its short, powerful neck for steering, while the hindmost third of its body is flattened like the tail of a crocodile for propulsion through the water.
