Preventative Ward

“If you have the foresight to cast this spell, perhaps you’ll live long enough to avoid parenting the consequences of your own libido.”
Archivist Belloran Duskthane, Third Circle Alchemist, Former Wet Nurse to the Rose Court

Effect

Upon casting, a subtle ward weaves over the caster’s lower abdomen and groin, invisible to sight and undetectable by most magical means. For the duration, the caster is rendered magically sterile and physically protected from conception — regardless of race, form, or magical alterations.

The ward also prevents bodily fluid exchange, acting as a full magical barrier that adapts to polymorphs, shapechangers, and even summoned avatars.

  • The ward prevents most diseases, including mundane and non-magical infections.
  • It does not prevent transmission of diseases that are magical in origin, curse-bound, or inflicted by spell effects.
  • The spell ends early if the caster is affected by a magic that forcibly alters their biology (e.g., Bestow Curse, Polymorph, Contagion).
  • This spell only affects the caster and cannot be cast on others.
  • Subtle casting may require a DC 10 Sleight of Hand check depending on the setting.

Side/Secondary Effects

If cast while already pregnant:

The spell violently rejects the paradox of its purpose — attempting to nullify a biological state that already exists. The ward collapses into the body, resulting in:

  • Immediate magical backlash: The caster suffers 6d6 force damage and must make a DC 18 Constitution saving throw. On a failure, they fall unconscious for 1 hour and begin to bleed internally.
  • Pregnancy is terminated in a traumatic magical implosion.
  • A Lingering Curse may form (DM’s discretion): the caster becomes temporarily or permanently infertile, or suffers a wild magic surge effect whenever casting healing or abjuration spells for 1d4 months.
