Android

Androids are complex technological creations crafted to resemble humans. Originally a servitor race to aid the empire in war, they have since broken free to form their own society. Unlike ordinary robots or ship AIs, androids do not simply respond according to their programming; rather, they have independent consciousnesses and are animated by souls—a distinction crucial to their generally accepted status as people rather than property. Creation of androids has been strictly regulated since the war, with the technology being a closely guarded secret by the government and corporations. Androids were originally created in the effort to fight the Luan Star Empire, but outrage over the perceived slavery of sentient beings as well as a system wide revolt by the androids themselves, led to them to being granted citizenship. Animosity exists in some parts of the Empire over the existence of robotic entities replacing citizens of the Empire, but over time and regulation, this sentiment has subsided and they are now fully accepted members of the Conglomerate. Many Androids choose to augment and enhance their appearance to blend in with Humans and other races, but many embrace their unique and keep their robotic appearance.   While in theory androids could be built to assume any appearance, most androids were created in the imagery of Humans. Nearly all androids feature a humanoid body shape and tattoo-like circuits that glow through their skin when operating at full power, but beyond this commonality, variations in physical appearance reflect an android’s design, role, and personality. Some take pains to blend into human society, while others deliberately display their mechanical nature. Though android bodies are assembled using tiny machines called nanites, their complex nervous systems attract and integrate souls in the same way organic creatures do. Most androids are fully grown at the time of their birth, and can technically live forever through constant repair, though most androids voluntarily release their bodies after a century or so to allow new souls to inhabit them—a process called renewal that’s viewed more as procreation than suicide.

Android Names

Many of them adopt nicknames, often given to them by their comrades. Some have chosen new names as a way to express their path in life. A few take on human names, often the name of a fallen friend or mentor.
