Centrum

Aptly named, the Centrum sits in the centre of the main prison complex of The Carcernatorum. It has been described by locals as a great big ugly brick sat overlooking the first walls. It's structure overlaps the wall just enough for gallows to be placed atop the edge of its' ramparts; so that the people of the city can see the guilty hang from the walls for weeks to come. This colossal complex acts as a head-quarters to the many Wardens, as well as council and meeting chambers that provide a voice to the members of the city able to buy themselves access to a Wardens' ear. While the majority of prisoners within the Carcernatorum are kept within barracks within the first wall, but outside the complex, it is known that prisoners known as 'Divercates' are kept in repurposed catacombs right underneath the Centrum. Whether or not this is related to experimentation and study chambers recently installed within the grounds is debated by those out of earshot of the Watch -- but it's well known that prisoners will often be brought into the Centrum, never to return. Those that do are often not the same. Despite the gallows sat on the very front of the building and dubious events happening below, the Centrum is also home to the more mundane side of running a city; administrative clerks work shift after shift to process prisoner, Wardens are often swept up in a schedule of meetings, paperwork or both, and all do their best for the sake of their own wellbeing to keep the city running.

Purpose / Function

While the purpose of the Centrum is mostly administrative, it is also an attempt at intimidation; the gallows are never empty, and no matter how high any of the ramshackle town buildings grow they'll never reach half the height of the looming clocktower sat upon it. The Wardens and the Watch are always watching --- no matter where you are in the city, you can see the spires and lights of the Centrum abuzz with activity. The clocktower does not function as a typical clocktower would; a face does not exist, the upper part instead a burning orb of light. This light changes hue as hours go by, marking the shifts of different prisoners and workers all across the city. It is often the first to change before the rest of the lighting in Carce follows suit.

Alterations

Originally, the Centrum was a base of operations for the mining outpost built upon the island. Since Breach-King Jakobis inauguration into power and the construction of a private mining corporation run by Warden Dahlia, it has since been repurposed as an administrative building.
