The First War

Tumult's Rage

The Tumult was unhappy. They rampaged across the cosmos to maintain the chaos, but were torn in two. There are two myths explaining these events: one says Tumult was cleft in twain by The Gardener's Sword, and the other says that chaos itself was Tumult's undoing. However it happened, the left of Tumult tumbled into the volcanic space where Earth and Fire met, and the right into the confluence of Air and Water.

Wrath and Storm

Nemain erupted from a volcano in a shroud of black feathers, dagger in hand. Enraged, she swiftly brought her dagger down on The Gardener: slicing away Their arms one by one. The Gardener's Sword was first, and tumbled to the right. Their Hammer fell to the left, and Their Sickle tumbled at their center. With a swift arc, the eight planes were released.   Tumult's right emerged from the confluence of Air and Water in the form of a cyclone, The Winds that howled "We are the bringers of change!" Blown about by the wind, the eight planes with one another in a violent cacophony and their shards tumbled hither and thither. The Gardener watched the ruin of Their creation in horror, and then Nemain cut away Their head and plunged her dagger right into Their Heart.   Shielded from sight in the storm, Nemain withdrew her dagger with The Gardener's heart still impaled on it and retreated into the shadows. The Gardener's blood flowed from the pumping heart, trailing behind her as she fled. This foul river is the one known as the River Styx: the river of death that winds across the cosmos.

Heirs to the Garden

The Gardener's body was dismembered and without a heart, but the spark was not extinguished, only fragmented. From Their Head came Oghma, who had all The Gardener's memory and knowledge.   Shar caught The Sickle and saw all that she could reap with it. She hid it away on Sylvane. It was then that Mystra discovered the death of her parent, and wept over what had become of perfection. Sylvane was watered by Mystra's tears, and when they fed the spark of inspiration held within the Sickle, Chauntea the Earthmother and Erastil The Horned Hunter were born.   Mystra had the gift of sight, and saw the possibilities made by all forces and elements of the cosmos She sought to preserve The Gardener's creation. She knew her parent's work on the material world was incomplete, and found Their Hammer too heavy to wield. In her sorrow she cast the Hammer down into the plane of Fire. But this was the hottest forge of all, and when the hammer struck it there was a blinding light for all to see. Gond emerged from the light, hammer in hand, to continue the work that his progenitor had begun.   Shar had the gift of The Gardener's sight, too, and knew that there was much power to be had if she could hold everything together. She knew Nemain would not stop until all that had been made was rubble. The Gardener's arm still gripped the Sword, and with Shar's kiss the last of the spark was animated by her fury. Tyr was born of this sword, full of righteous fury and ready to wage war.

Divine Retribution

With the spark exhausted, the rest of The Gardener's body began to crumble. From these parts rose the first eidolons. Tyr and Gond recruited a legion of eidolons to march on Nemain's hiding place and bring her to justice.   Nemain heard them coming, and used her dagger to carve The Heart into innumerable pieces. She awakened them with malice, forming her Pestilent Horde. Gond brought his hammer down with thunderous force on this blighted corner of the cosmos, creating a hole without a bottom, infinitely deep.   Tyr and his army cut through the Pestilent Horde, throwing them down into this new Abyss. The Brothers' army reached Nemain, and her dagger was no match for Tyr's sword without the element of surprise. Gond shackled her legs, and Tyr cut off her hands in retribution. She was cast down into the Abyss to be eternally swarmed and pecked by her own pestilent horde.
