Thalos Settlement in Arvor | World Anvil

Thalos

Thalos was a magnificient elven city on the Lake of Ancestors, until the Cataclysm sent it tumbling into the Sunken Sea. Unbeknownst to most land-dwellers, many elves survived these events and live on deep beneath the sea. These Sea Elves are adapted for life underwater: with gills, fins, and tolerance for the temperatures of the deep. The elves of Thalos live in isolation and secrecy, and abhor the use of arcane magic.

Demographics

Thalos is a closed society, permitting only Sea Elves

Defences

The Keystone projects an aura that hides the city from sight to all those who do not descend from the old elven families of Thalos. When the city is pointed out to someone who cannot see it, they may be able to see it in the future, even if they are not elven.

Industry & Trade

Thalos is an isolationist city-state, and rarely engages in trade with other societies. Under extraordinary circumstances, Thalos has traded with nearby Sahuagin settlements.

Infrastructure

A tall white stone obelisk called The Keystone stands at the center of the city, emitting a green beam of light that reaches the surface, visible only to elves that descend from Old Thalossians. While most of the city's structures have grown from coral since the city sunk into the sea, the Keystone predates the Cataclysm. The obelisk is etched with ancient arcane runes, and imbued with old magic, no longer replicable today. Before The Cataclysm, the Keystone warded the old city of Thalos against disease and curses, and provided illusory defense from other species.   Since the city sunk, the Keystone's range has decreased but scholars believe that its magic aura granted the elves their seaworthy adaptations.
