Glittering Gulch Settlement in Arvor | World Anvil

Glittering Gulch

Glittering Gulch is a boomtown built around two industries: mining elemental crystals, and bleeding the Nouveau Riche dry. The Gulch has attracted hundreds of starry-eyed dreamers over the last century, and an abundance of gaming houses and entertainment venues have sprung up to part them with their coin.   A hundred years after the discovery of the motherlode, the saloons, cardrooms, and gaming houses are the real business of The Gulch. Gilded doors in gleaming towers of polished sandstone transport you from the harsh desert sun to palaces of delights. Pick your poison: Tymora's games of chance, burlesque shows sun-up to sun-down, or perhaps some good old fashioned intoxicants. Whatever it is, The Gulch has got you covered.

Government

Landowners of Glittering Gulch elect a council and mayor annually. The council selects a sheriff, who hires deputies to police the town.

History

In 600 GS, Human settlers laid claim to a stretch of the Sparselands between two creeks, aiming to become the most central trading hub in Arvor. They called their settlement Midgate. And for a time, it looked like they might succeed. But around 1200, the creeks dried up and the wise folk moved out of town.   The settlement struggled in decay until 1499 when a clay gatherer hit the motherlode just beneath the surface in the creek bed: elemental crystals, brimming with magical potential, and ready to be extracted. Before this discovery, these crystals were exceptionally rare, so this arcane curiosity became a rush for riches.  The boomtown that sprung up on the vestiges of Midgate is called Glittering Gulch.
