A place that is only heard of in hushed conversations and confrontations of topics that can only result in the agreement of its existence among the common people. The abyss is a place of destruction and chaos, ruled and filled to the brim with demons, and yet simultaneously nigh empty as far as the eye can see. This endless waste is the final fate of those who fall to depravity.
Endless smog, smoke, and clouds fill the sky, blotting out any light that might exist in this realm, leaving everything as an incredibly dark, dreary atmosphere. This means that there is no plant life naturally occurring in the realm, though such things are unnecessary in the underworld to begin with. Normally nothing but endless dark gray crags, mountains, and other rock formations, it is incredibly difficult to navigate the realm due to a lack of notable features to those who end up trapped in this realm. The only exception is the lower half of the dark tower, which can often be seen in many places throughout the realm due to its size and iconic construction.
There is no functional life within the abyss, with the exception of demons and those who are sent to the abyss to be punished for their sins in life. As demons do not require food or water, nor do they sleep, the majority of the realm does not support or aid in these needs at all, resulting in an incredibly hazardous location for mortals to tread. Worse, the locations that might bear the capacity to support mortal life commonly are controlled and caused by the presence of a demon lord.
As the realm of demon lords, there is no greater phenomena then the direct impact the existence of a demon lord causes to the realm around them. Able to alter and adjust the part of the realm they reside in as they see fit. This can vary from an icy wasteland to a lush jungle of darkness, as such the presence of a demon lord is incredibly easy to discern in within the abyss.
The eponymous demons are the the majority of creatures dwelling within the abyss, the wide variety of metaphysical manifestations of mortal's negative emotions and desire for destruction made into entities capable of inflicting the exact deep dark thoughts that generated them.
However, there is the exception to this rule of demons, which is the dwelling cthonic primordials who have chosen to reside within this realm. Akin to gods of the level of the greater demon lords such as Bael, then they are dwellers of the realm. The cthonic primordials are all said to originate from this desolate place, and although only few have decided to remain in the realm, each and every one who has are a notorious threat to be taken seriously.
