Frenzywind Stone
With enough force, anything can pierce through stone.
A shining stone that forms into jagged spiralling rock formations that rise up as pillars, frenzywind stone is a deadly material that rends and grinds down everythong around it due to its intense properties. This stone possesses the power to turn gusts of wind into hailing streams of slashes capable of cutting flesh and rending metal in large amounts, causing entire environmental deadzones wherever it rises out form the ground beneath it, other stone or metals often within the viscinity often end up smoothed to a shine by such vicarious winds.
Weapons, ammunition, armor, and other equipment made out of frenzywind stone that weights 70 lbs or more, cause an aura of slashing wind to manifest within a 10-ft. radius around the item, dealing 1d4 slashing damage + 1 point per the item's caster level + 1 point for every 5 lbs past 70 the item weighs to all creatures within the aura each round. Weapons, ammunition, armor, and other equipment made out of frenzywind stone otherwise function as if made out of stone except as noted.
Weapons Weapons and ammunition made from frenzywind stone doubles the threat range of a weapon and deals damage as if the weapon were one size category smaller. The increased threat range benefit doesn’t stack with any other effects that expand the threat range of a weapon (such as the keen edge spell, keen weapon property or the Improved Critical feat). If there are any other effects that expand the threat range of a weapon (such as the keen edge spell or the Improved Critical feat) or the weapon has the keen weapon property, instead increase the critical threat range of the weapon by +1. This bonus is applied after abilities such Improved Critical or the keen weapon property and cannot be doubled. Weapons and ammunition made from frenzywind stone also deal their damage as slashing damage instead of their original damage type.
Armor Armor made from frenzywind stone causes unwieldy and powerful winds that affect even the wearer. The wearer and all creatures within a 10-ft. radius of the wearer take a -4 penalty to acrobatics and fly skill checks. This powerful wind also weakens the strength of incoming blows, providing the wearer damage reduction of 2/piercing if it’s light armor, 4/piercing if it’s medium armor, and 6/piercing if it’s heavy armor.
Items not primarily of metal or stone are not meaningfully affected by being partially made of frenzywind stone.
Properties
Material Characteristics
Usually forming as large spiralling feathered gemstone towers in a variety of rocky locations. The stone appears similar to a brighter, green emerald, the specific formation it takes as it grows upwards making it look like a spiral of stone feathers that give a particularly smooth yet jagged appearance and makes its reflection of light particularly fascinating.
Physical & Chemical Properties
The most notable and primary feature of frenzywind stone is its ability to kick up windstorms, tornados, and other nasty gusts as it grows, causing wind to become unsustainable shearing blasts. This effect seems to have some intent behind the growth just as plants turn to face the sun during the day, as the wind is often attracted by movement. The secondary trait is it's ability to always grow upwards.
Geology & Geography
Preferring primarily rocky climates such as mountains or underground, it is unlikely to find the stone in areas in which wind would be inhibited such as forests but not impossible. Such cases often result in the surrounding area becoming barren once the emerald pillar becomes large enough. Most veins are found however in chasms or high up on rocky cliffs along mountains where vegetation is rare, as is animals.
History & Usage
History
In earlier times, the shining pillars that come to mind when one thought of frenzywind were viewed as ill omens and vile wards that cursed the land and drained life around it, believed to be the work of hags or liches to mark their territory, it took till the realization that the air was not rotted and instead being controlled to move at high slicing speeds for people to realize the magical occurence in front of them. While this did not improve the wariness towards the material or towards green gems during the earlier eras, it did enable proper protection against manifestations of the magical mineral and allow the collection of whatever remained.
Cultural Significance and Usage
Often viewed as totems belonging to wind spirits and elementals, such areas in which frenzywind naturally grows are considered the domain of supernatural creatures and believed to be inhabited by particularly violent manifestations of the sky.
Distribution
Trade & Market
The stone is no doubt considered a dangerous and exotic material for alchemy and craftsmanship, the beautiful shape and colouration of the gemstone often results in many wishing to display it and show their wealth by being able to properly contain and manage whatever chunks they can find. As such, it is often the rich, boisterous, or stubborn who are found most often desriing to acquire the material, with very rare sellers showing up, simply desiring to be rid of it. Despite this, there is cases of small trade of relatively small amounts of the material for mercenaries seeking its properties in a more manageable form.
Storage
The stone must be stored in locations with no open air if it is desired to be kept in large amounts, otherwise, often breaking the stone and keeping the chunks separate can help prevent its powers from manifesting in a lethal manner.
Law & Regulation
A rarely regulated material, its ability to cause complete excavation of wildlife and vegetation in the surrounding areas often results in the destruction and removal of any found frenzywind stone, regardless of intent to use it. Dangerous to even travel with, even a single pillar of the material is capable of tearing down entire streets and there has been cases of entire villages disappearing because of the emergence of the stone.
