Adamantine

Adamantine is extremely strong and favored by weapon and armor smiths alike for its ability to cut through solid barriers with ease and endure heavy blows.

Weapons, ammunition, armor, and other equipment made out of adamanatine function as if made out of steel except as noted. Adamantine is so costly that weapons and armor made from it are always of masterwork quality; the masterwork cost is not included in the prices given.

Weapons Weapons fashioned from adamantine have a natural ability to bypass hardness when sundering weapons or attacking objects, ignoring hardness less than 20.

Armor Armor made from adamantine grants its wearer damage reduction of 1/— if it’s light armor, 2/— if it’s medium armor, and 3/— if it’s heavy armor.

Items without metal parts cannot be made from adamantine. An arrow could be made of adamantine, but a quarterstaff could not.

Material Characteristics

An onyx reflective black metal, Adamantine is often found in very cubic, jagged formations when exposed to open air but is otherwise notable as "underground obsidian" when found as a proper vein, appearing to be black glassy streaks of ore when found within other stone.

Physical & Chemical Properties

The only one and true characteristic of adamantine is its nigh invincibility and ability to cut near anything. This is all owed to its own intrinsic density and strength, making it the strongest metal to most of the known world. However, another less known quality is its capacity to overcome the extraordinary resistances of certain creatures, making it excellent, if not necessary in the preparations of hunting certain fiends who'd seek to bring harm to civilization. This often makes it come at odds with its own rarity, often leaving many a creature properly slain simply due to a warrior's inability to acquire it.

Geology & Geography

Most often found in formerly volcanic areas containing basalt, it is often found interrupting naturally formed structures of stone, metal, or crystal formations. This often occurs at depths that caves naturally form, around a mile or so below the surface, though in cases where basalt reaches the surface and or begins forming pillars, it can be found at higher depths.

However, there is a second known way to acquire adamantine, slaying an adnemen lion provides one with the ability to take its adamantine bones for oneself, though such a feat puts one in a danger that only having adamantine to begin with can get one out of.

Origin & Source

For as long as it has been known to mortal, adamantine has had no real known origin, though it is thought that it is the blood of a slain war god, though no such records exist of such an entity or religion around such. The overall pattern in which adamantine has been found also does not agree with these rumours, as it would leave implication such a thing occured over hundreds of thousands of years ago.

History & Usage

Everyday use

Adamantine has two uses: To create something meant to be indestructible, such as vaults, precious relics, or family heirlooms; and to create a weapon to slay monsters. As it's capacity to be many a monsters weakness is as well known as cold iron's. Sadly, due to its rarity it is more often used for protective purpose among those who can afford it, primarily nobles or scholars.

Cultural Significance and Usage

While belonging to no one culture, adamantine has a perception that it causes sapient weapons, due to the connections it has with roaming blades of black metal, seeking partners to accomplish unknown goals. However, this is often considered to be misconstrued as most of such weapons are unnaturally coloured black and are often made of weaker metals, though it does bear resemblance to the legends of blades made from the souls of angelo.

Hazards

As adamantine is one of the hardest and strongest materials there is, smithing and crafting with it can be difficult as it can often destroy anything it touches on accident, even accidentally shattering one's own tools if not properly tempered. Many smiths have accidentally ruined themselves being too hasty to smith this metal and ruined both their tools, and themselves.
