Ulduar Raid Lore
General Summary
Introduction
Kel'Thuzad has fallen, Malygos has been stopped, and the black dragonflight's operations have been disrupted. Yet even as we celebrate these victories, a darker truth has emerged from the Storm Peaks. Ulduar, a colossal Titan fortress, was meant to be a research facility and a prison, containing Yogg-Saron, the Old God known as the Beast with a Thousand Maws. For millennia, the Titan watchers ensured the Old God remained sealed away. But something has gone terribly wrong. The watchers have been corrupted by Yogg-Saron's influence. This corruption has been weakening the land and its defenders, making us all more vulnerable to the Scourge and every other threat. The iron dwarves, the vrykul, even the Lich King himself have all been touched by the Old God's insidious influence. We will venture into Ulduar, fight our way past the corrupted watchers, and descend into the prison of Yogg-Saron. There we will do what the Titans could not… destroy the Old God permanently! Only then can we truly hope to defeat the Lich King, for as long as Yogg-Saron lives, his corruption will continue to fester in the heart of Northrend!
The Siege
Flame Leviathan
A massive titan defense vehicle designed to repel invaders from Ulduar's outer gates. It has been corrupted by Yogg-Saron's influence and now attacks anyone approaching the facility, friend or foe.
Razorscale
A proto-drake that has been enslaved by the iron dwarves and used as an aerial assault weapon. She represents the corruption spreading beyond Ulduar's walls, as even the native creatures of the Storm Peaks fall under the Old God's sway.
Ignis the Furnace Master
A massive iron giant who serves as the forgemaster for the iron dwarves. He creates the iron vrykul in his forge, transforming captured vrykul into mindless servants of Loken and Yogg-Saron.
XT-002 Deconstructor
A titan construct designed as a "toy" or experimental creation. Its childlike personality has been twisted by corruption, and it now gleefully destroys anything in its path while calling for its absent "father" (the titans).
The Antechamber
Assembly of Iron
Three iron dwarves (Steelbreaker, Runemaster Molgeim, and Stormcaller Brundir) who serve as elite commanders of the iron dwarf armies. They guard the inner sanctum and represent the military might of the corrupted forces.
Stormcaller Brundir
Brundir is a master of storm magic and lightning, drawing his power from the same elemental forces that Thorim, the Keeper of Storms, once commanded. As a Stormcaller, he channels devastating electrical attacks and can overload enemies with raw voltage. His mastery of storm magic represents the iron dwarves' connection to the titans' elemental powers. Brundir is the most magically inclined of the three, using ranged lightning attacks and arcane abilities to control the battlefield. His presence demonstrates how the iron dwarves have perverted the titans' gifts, using storm magic not for protection but for conquest.
Runemaster Molegim
Molgeim is a runemaster, a practitioner of the ancient runic magic that the titans used to shape and empower their creations. He can inscribe powerful runes that enhance his allies, protect them from harm, or unleash devastating magical effects on his enemies. Runemasters hold a revered position in iron dwarf society, as they are the keepers of the titans' written language and the secrets encoded within. Molgeim's abilities include summoning rune-empowered constructs and casting protective barriers. He represents the intellectual and mystical tradition of the iron dwarves, showing that they are not mere brutes but inheritors of ancient titan knowledge, even if they use it for dark purposes.
Steelbreaker
The largest and most physically imposing of the three, Steelbreaker is a warrior of unmatched strength and durability. He embodies the raw physical power of the iron dwarves, wielding massive weapons and wearing nearly impenetrable armor forged in Ulduar's furnaces. Steelbreaker is the vanguard, the unstoppable force that crushes enemy lines through sheer might. His fusion of flesh and metal makes him incredibly resilient, and he can unleash devastating physical attacks that can shatter stone and steel alike. He represents the iron dwarves' transformation from normal earthen (titan-forged stone beings) into iron-enhanced warriors, showing the "perfection" that Loken promised his followers through the Curse of Flesh's reversal.
Kologarn
A massive stone watcher created by the titans to guard the entrance to Ulduar's inner chambers. His arms can be destroyed and regenerated, representing the seemingly endless defenses of the facility.
Algalon the Observer
MA celestial being sent by the titans to evaluate Azeroth. If he determines the world is too corrupted (by Old Gods or other threats), he will send a signal to re-originate the planet, essentially wiping all life and starting over. He is not evil, merely following his programming. Defeating him proves that Azeroth's inhabitants are strong enough to defend their world and deserve to continue existing.
The Keepers
Auriaya
The Crazy Cat Lady of Ulduar, Auriaya was once a caretaker of the facility's feral defenders. She has been driven mad by Yogg-Saron's whispers and now roams the halls with her corrupted feline guardians.
Hodir
The Keeper of Winter, Hodir has been frozen in ice by Yogg-Saron's corruption. You must free him from his prison while fighting off the corrupted ice elementals and iron dwarves attempting to keep him contained.
Thorim
The Keeper of Storms, Thorim has been deceived by Loken into believing his wife Sif was killed by mortals. Consumed by grief and rage, he has withdrawn to his arena. You must fight through his gauntlet and reveal Loken's treachery to free him from his despair.
Freya
The Keeper of Nature, Freya has been partially corrupted by Yogg-Saron. Her chamber is overrun with twisted plant life and corrupted ancients. By defeating her corrupted guardians, you can weaken Yogg-Saron's hold on her.
Mimiron
The Keeper of Invention and a brilliant (if eccentric) titan mechanic. He has been driven mad by isolation and corruption, creating increasingly dangerous and unstable inventions. He pilots a massive multi-stage combat vehicle in his madness.
Descent into Madness
General Vezax
A faceless general, one of Yogg-Saron's most powerful servants. He guards the final approach to the Old God's prison, representing the raw power of the Old Gods' armies.
Yogg-Saron
The God of Death, the Beast with a Thousand Maws, the Lucid Dream. This Old God has been imprisoned beneath Ulduar since the titans defeated him in the world's youth. His corruption has spread throughout Ulduar and beyond, influencing countless events across Azeroth's history. He shows you visions of the past, revealing his role in corrupting Neltharion into Deathwing and even influencing the creation of the Lich King. Defeating him requires the aid of the freed Keepers, whose power helps shield you from his maddening influence.
