The Wastelands of Shame
The Wastelands of Shame are named as such in every language on Arret. It is a land that is categorized by heavy volcanic activity, strong natural disasters, and unbearable levels of radiation. The natural flora has overtaken the ruins of the wasteland. Any of the technology and archaology that remains in the Wastelands are unreachable due to the conditions.
Along the border of the Wastelands there is a wall of debris to discourage people from entering. The debris is studied by several archaeologists from all major political states and is said to contain inscripions from the time of the catastrophe. The language has been partially translated through efforts of researchers to contain warnings or pleas for humanity to do better.
Geography
The Wastelands of Shame is a volcanic region made up with low peaks and sharp chasms. The water in the area has a large sulfer content and seems to on a cycle that depends on the cycle of explosions that take place in the area. It is centered around a sea that is accessable to the ocean. The waters of the Sea of Misery are largely considered the most dangerous waters in Arret and is prone to tsunami activity.
Localized Phenomena
The entire area of the Wastelands is constantly ravaged by either volcanic erruption or the earthquakes and weather phenomenons that come alongside them. It has been observed to hail ice the size of live stock which tear through and reshape the terrain. This harsh enviroment ensures that most of the flora in the area is reliant on spores as it seems that there is a lack of pollinators present in the area. Chloroplast also seems to be incompatable with the area with how often thick clouds of volcanic ash block the sunlight from the ground.
Climate
The climate of the Wastelands is humid with a thick smell of sulfur that permeates the area. The air has a thick haze due to the amount of spores that are present in the air. Despite it being located as far north as it is, the vocanic activity keeps the climate warm and muggy throughout most of the year.
Fauna & Flora
The plantlife that grows in this area are deeply colored. The colors to them are either oversaturated or only able to be seen in ultraviolet. The plantlife is considered to be toxic to humans in any and all contact however there is compelling evidence that the ecosystem is in the process of neutralizing the radiation in the area. The efforts seem to be largely supported by fungi which take up the niche that trees fill in most other biomes.
The fauna in this area are seemingly fully adapted to the wastelands. There has been a few records of the fauna leaving the Wasteland for the tundras of Iktalik, however all fauna died shortly after leaving the barrier seemingly incapable of surviving without the specific conditions of the Wastelands. The fauna seems to be largely either reptilian or mammalian in nature however lack of proper study of the ecosystem these theories are laregely based on a limited number of escaped specimines. It is seen that most fauna seem to be adapted for low visibility.
