Vaughn Skylar Character in Arratha | World Anvil

Vaughn Skylar

Vaughn Skylar was the first Wizard of the modern variety. He lived in the 4th generation of Arcanum, the age where magic was just beginning to be understood and used, though no one could manage much more than a simple flame flickering in their palm.   Vaughn studied much like everyone else with an aptitude for the arcane arts. He worked hard, and slowly (agonizingly slowly for him at first), began to hone his abilities and he was eventually able to produce that flame which, to many, signified a mastery of the arcane. Vaughn, however, was far from satisfied.   He continued to study, attempting to push the limits of what humans were capable of through arcane powers. After many years of intense study (a time in which he shut himself off completely from the world), Vaughn developed a new skill: the ability to discern magical auras around objects and people.   Using this newfound sight, Vaughn explored the world, eventually finding a few artifacts which aided him further in his pursuit for more power. None of them helped him on his quest more than what he dubbed the Pendant of the Ages.   Using the Pendant of the Ages, Vaughn was able to extend his life, granting him far more time than anyone had ever had before to study the arcane, gaining levels of power few had dreamed existed. With his increased time in the world, Vaughn found himself yearning for a partner. Eventually, he found Anabelle Dreng, and they quickly fell in love.   Through his newfound love, he realized that, despite his seeming immortality through the Pendant of the Ages, Vaughn wanted to leave a legacy by teaching others what he had learned through his life. So, he condensed the detailed notes he had taken throughout his life learning the arcane into a series of lessons which could be used to propel anyone who had an aptitude for magic well beyond the basic level of producing a flame in their hand to detecting magic of their own to granting themselves the ability to breathe underwater (as a start). Vaughn titled these lessons "A Complete Study of the Arcane".   After a couple hundred years of teaching the next generations of Wizards, Vaughn and his wife decided that their time had come, and they left the Amulet of the Ages to their son, Corben Skylar, so they could retire and disappear (and presumably, finish their lives together, in peace).
