Black Maw

The Yova Bay of Okanu is a haven for sailors traveling to Amyhra. The mountains surrounding it protect it from the vicious storms that send unfortunate vessels to their doom, typically a Stormdash. This sanctuary from the harsh nature of the Tryvyum Sea has allowed terrestrial, amphibious, and aquatic species to thrive. However, there is one portion of the bay even the deep aquatic species will steer clear from: the Black Maw, a massive abyss that abruptly descends into the depths on the western end of the bay. It's shape and steep drop-off from the bay floor suggests it is not a natural occurrence, potentially the home of some great burrowing sea monster or the result of the deeds of a one of the advanced civilizations of the past. It's nature intrigues the scholars of Amyhra, but they lack the technology to explore it and attempts to hire members of amphibious or aquatic species to do so in their stead have been unsuccessful. The elders of the aquatic species native to the bay speak of a time before the arrival of the three nations to Okanu where great sea beasts would become trapped in the bay after the height of the Great Tides, nesting in the Black Maw and preying on their people. Many battles were fought against these beasts and they were eventually vanquished, though many fear that not all were killed and that at least one slumbers at the bottom of the abyss. More radical members of the aquatic species believe the increased sea traffic through the bay may awaken the beast and advocate for a cease of all passage over or near the Maw.
