Sydonian Nobility

The Sydonian monarchy dates back to before the doom, but the feudal system was not in practice until the age of heroes (roughly 700 AD). Noble titles are hereditary and follow Sydonian Elective succession law. Upon the death of a noble (including the king), the spouse of the noble inherits the title until an heir is chosen. All of the noble's vassals elect the heir in a gathering known as the Moot. Election of the royal heir must also be voted on by the Witan (parliamentary council to the king), who have final authority. Succession is not limited to male heirs.   Cyning: The King of Sydonia.   Cwen: The Queen of Sydonia.   Ætheling: A prince or princess of Sydonia.   Eorl (duke/duchess): Highest title of nobility after the king and queen. Once had total authority over large swaths of land, but now is little more than a formal title designating cultural power rather than political. Grants a seat in the Witan.   Thegn (count/countess): Lower than Eorl, but still a landed noble. Once held authority over a county, but now grants a seat in Parliament representing that county.   Huscarl (Sir/Dame): Landed knights granted small estates in return for protection of the realm. Does not grant a seat in Parliament.   Lord/Lady: Unlanded title granted by appointment from the King. The Lord Speaker of the House of Nobles is always granted lordship. This title is not hereditary.
