Kal-ein
Known as the “lonely city,” this dwarven stronghold has withstood dragon attacks and the ebb and flow of local human politics for 1500 years. Completed sometime after the arrival of man on Arlyss, Kal’ein has provided support to elves and men since its founding. Creating masterful works of iron, steel and even mithril, the dwarves of Kal’ein are superior craftsmen even among their kin. Though unlike their northern kin, the dwarves of kal’ein have only ever defended their halls from attackers, choosing to provide material support rather than fighting forces.
Government and trade
While King Thorgrimm Darkhammer rules as king under the mountain, the real power in Kal-ein lies in the guilds. Each guild elects a guildmaster who sits on the craftsmen's council and advises the king. The head of the temple of the three Ulni Brightstone serves as spiritual adviser to the king. The guilds of Kal-ein are thus: The metalworkers' guild: Smithies and makers of fine weapons and armor. They supply the defense of the city and trade their wares with the surface. Led by Bruni Redbellow. The stoneworkers' guild: Masons and workers of stone and rock. They maintain the halls of Kal-ein and oversee the mines. Sometimes hired by Sydonians to build castles and fortifications. Led by Dain Hammerfell. The gemcutters' guild: Jewelers and workers of gem and precious metals. Led by Hanarr Brightstone. The toymakers' guild: The toymakers craft the finest toys in all of Arlyss, highly sought-after by parents across the kingdom of Sydonia and as far as Ekoros. Led by Lofarr Longbeard. The artificers' guild: The newest guild in Kal-ein, the artificers' guild is largely made up of rock gnomes living in Kal-ein. They produce the finest firearms and cannons in Arlyss. Led by Gaxim Cobblerest. Trade caravans from across the world come to Kal-Ein to trade for their masterful works.Military
The military of Kal-ein is charged with the defense of the city. Led by general Thrain Brightbeard, the army consists of a highly-trained and regimented reserve to be called upon in times of conflict. Unlike their northern brethren, the dwarves of Kal-ein are masters of spear and shield. In order to repel invaders, the infantry of kal-ein establishes "tortle formations" by forming shieldwalls from behind which they attack with long spears. Supplemented by clerics, paladins and artificers, the kal-ein military is a fearsome foe entirely devoted to the defense of the city. Cannons line the walls surrounding the gates of the city, as well as murderholes, oilpits and firing positions for riflemen.
