Tadrir Settlement in Aridida | World Anvil

Tadrir

Tadrir is a small settlement that is located on the westernmost part of the continent. Tadrir sits high on a cliff that drops into the sea. There are high winds and lots of wind. No easy access to the sea and the people living there only grow enough food for themselves. All trade comes in from the land and the next closest town or settlement is at a day and a half to two days ride away in any direction. The population of Tadrir leans more on the male side because of the harsh environment and work that is there.  Tadrir’s government is small, with just a mayor and a small enforcement force. The mayor is voted in every 10 years. The most recent mayor has been revoted four times. The laws were drawn up when the Tadrir was first established and there has been little change since.   The settlement only has two exports. Qiew eggs and Sespese. The Qiew nest in the cliffs by Tadrir and lay between 7 to 18 at a time up to three times a year. Every 10th egg laid by the Qiew is infertile and considered a dud. These eggs are pushed out of the nest by the birds into the inky black seas below. The eggs, which for the most part, land unharmed in the shallow waters next to the cliffs. This shallow part extends about 10 to 15 feet away from the cliff before a sharp drop-off into a black abyss. The people Tadrir who collect the eggs use ropes and ancient hand holds to reach the water. Once at the waterline they dive in and collect the discarded eggs. As a safety precaution, another rope is used to keep the diver from getting too close to the drop-off. The second export from Tadrir is sespese. Sespese is mined about two miles south of Tadrir. A few of the mine shafts are dug into the cliff side while others into a hill that is close by.
