The Onyx Queen Myth in Arhor'ha | World Anvil

The Onyx Queen

Listen here you sea bred dogs with rum in hearts and hands,   Hold ya hits and take ya swigs, so someone start up the band,   Play us a tune, underneath the moon, and mates sing along if you can   For danger blooms in the oceans soon for the Queen's ode travels to land!

Summary

A foreign woman who hoarded wealth died at sea. The people who abandoned her were turned into ravens and now circle a large section of black ocean.

Historical Basis

About 100 years ago, a mysterious elven woman of regal attire came into Freeport on a ship. She was rumored to be a consort of the Pirate King though nothing was ever confirmed. Many shipments of presumed gems and coins were seen on her ship and many were killed swiftly when they attempted to touch any of it. Then suddenly she stopped appearing, a large patch of ocean turned black, and two ravens were spotted circling the area.

Spread

The myth is mostly common in Freeport and is apart of the more recent myths similar to the Dark Star.

Variations & Mutation

The Onyx Queen has evolved into a figure of both fear and potential adventure. Many pirates and adventurers, inspired by her tale, travel towards her burial to see if they can claim the untold wealth her spirit guards to this day. None survive but that doesn't stop people from trying. There are also joking tales about her relationship with the Pirate King, a myth she was potentially smote by the Raven Queen for digging up the graves of the deceased, and one where she was said to be the ruler of a distant island undiscovered by Freeport.

Cultural Reception

Many make the Onyx Queen as out to be a source of laughter, revelry, and adventure though it all depends upon the myth in question.
