Sunder Item in Arhor'ha | World Anvil

Sunder

First wielded by Donovan Gathy, Sunder was created when he stabbed a Cyric priest with a steel poker out of rage for his murdered family. The sentient blade was forged by ritual and is light to its wielder and heavy to anyone else. It served Donovan throughout Season 5 (Slayers) as a budding sentience that thirsted for and absorbed raw elements (fire, acid, necrosis) as food. This extended to living things as it consumed Oswald, a priest of Lathander, and part of Vyne, the immortal Green dragon. Sunder passed from Donovan's hands at the battle of Outpost 6 when he struck a highly magical crystal while his soul burned with raw power from a deal with Gig. It caused an explosion that eradicated a good portion of the fort. The sword survived under the possession of its new owner, Gig. Orion was offered to be able to wield it, but declined as the cost was his soul and Ethel's.   Gig held onto the weapon briefly where it was used to Sunder the body of Vyne through a blow in the head. It trapped the soul of a Dark Champion within its frame like a living prison.   Sunder remained a sword-in-the-stone if the stone was a dragon until Faelor obtained it as part of his quest in the Crystal Fellowship. To be bonded to him, it needed to drink of the blood of Iolanthe, his patron, or his sister, Poppy. Faelor slew his sister and used the bonded weapon to sever a portal before a demiplane could collide with their place. It also sealed Ty on the other side. Io lost her brother that day. Faelor lost his sister.   Sunder was used in the final confrontation of the champions of Targryn (Silver Dragon) and Gigareth (Reth). In a single strike, it slew a dark champion, who rose as his trump card as a replica of Faelor. This cloned Sunder to its sister sword: Sealer. The Targryn champions were victorious and Sunder returned to Gig's possession while Sealer held the seal on Reth's seal. (more) Sunder was taken as a failsafe weapon for Heartholme, where it resided in the town generated by a wish at the end of the confrontation with Gigareth. It was sought out by the protagonist, wielded by Tywin (Ty) as a means to escape the prison. Ultimately it was Iris who wielded it and freed everyone by shattering a crystal heart with it.   Sunder was given to Sigwald, who made a deal with Gig to see his family reunited. Constantly testing Gig's will, he relinquished Sunder to Ty under his authority to replace the lost Frostfang that now is part of Northsworne.
