Aetherfall Academy

Located in the Lapiz District of The Shining City, the Aetherfall Academy is the oldest and most influential organization in Orthestria. Though its main purpose is as a center of education and research, its leading triumvirate, the Aetherfall Council, has a direct hand in the politics of Orthestria.

Structure

Academy students are separated into three classes: the Aether Class, the Beast Class, and the Crystal Class. A student's class determines what subjects they study and where in the Lapiz District they live. The sorting process is a mystery to all but faculty: while students of a particular class do share many similarities in personality and talent by the time they graduate, incipient students have little in common with their classmates. Each class is headed by the corresponding Magister of the Aetherfall Council, who oversees faculty hires and student graduations. Professors at the Academy teach all Classes, though there are some subjects that are exclusive to certain Classes.

Culture

Aether Class

In spite of being named for the Academy itself, the Aether Class has a reputation among the other Classes for being the most boring of the three. Students of this Class are well-rounded, not showing an affinity for any particular school of magic but taking to all with equal ease. They tend to be patient and good-humored, oftentimes coming from large families or tight-knit communities.

Beast Class

Students of the Beast Class have a strong connection to animals and creatures of all sorts, and it is rare to see one of these students without a pet or familiar. These students are known for being remarkably gregarious, often to the surprise of those that are placed in this class, having entered the Academy quiet and shy.

Crystal Class

Easily the most mysterious of the three classes, Crystal Class students are quiet and studious, tending to keep to themselves. While all students are welcome to help out in the gardens, it is this class that does the majority of the work, and in fact many of their classes revolve around maintenance of the gardens. Interestingly enough, few of these students have any particular affinity for plants; rather, it is weather magic and shifting seasons that call to them. The great Weather Mages that maintain the climate of Orthestria and ensure bountiful harvests are all graduates of the Crystal Class.
