Varyjon

Written by cone

God of Balance, Atonement, and Justice

Pronunciation - /VAIR-ee-yawn/
Varyjon is the absolute arbiter of fairness and balance in matters of criminal, political, and economic deliberations. Varyjon holds the mantle of balanced judgement for all parties according to their status, and for the fair payment of dues whether in punishment or purchase. His domain leads him to be worshipped or invoked by bankers, merchants, judges, guards, and even rebels. Since the reasons for a crime do not factor into the balance of judgement, only the status of the parties, Varyjon is often seen as an enemy to those who would "do what is right, no matter the cost". Those who are willing to sacrifice everything for a cause will sometimes surrender symbolically or in prayer to the judgement of Varyjon, knowing that whether they succeed or fail in their task, Varyjon's judgement will be rendered equivalently regardless.

Divine Domains

Clerics of Varyjon have access to the Justice, Order, and Retribution and domains when choosing their path.

Divine Symbols & Sigils

The holy symbol of Varyjon is a pair of interlinked curves of two disparate metals of dissimilar value. The hole left in the center may be filled with a third metal, set with a gem or pearl or the like, or left hollow and used to thread a chain or other such attachment.

Physical Description

Identifying Characteristics

Varyjon's face is never shown, instead being hidden at all times behind a mask. This only serves to reinforce his role as the impartial arbiter, while simultaneously making him seem even more alien to the emotional masses he is meant to judge.

Physical quirks

Varyjon almost never moves while speaking. Instead, his hands remain clasped, and not even his head moves to acknowledge those he speaks to, or to emphasize the words he speaks.

Special abilities

  • Varyjon's surroundings are perpetually affected by an aura of truth. Those who speak in his presence are compelled to speak the truth as it is, in matter of plain facts, rather than as they feel situations to be.
  • Varyjon will often appear as a gargantuan creature combining features of both large cats and birds. Such creatures, if found by adventurers, are often the goal of quests for truth, absolution, or justice for wrongdoing however (mis)placed.

Apparel & Accessories

Varyjon's clothing is always clerical, and flowing, as a judge's robes. They seem to indicate an air of official standing, regardless of the cultural upbringing of the viewer.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Brought into being at the request of Deshai by Oum, Varyjon's first task was to oversee justice for Shiwa knowingly allowing Deshai to birth Usugo. However, given that Usugo was born and cursed to do exactly as his godly domain specified, Varyjon rendered the same task as judgement on Shiwa. This, changing absolutely nothing, only infuriated Deshai more, but Varyjon wasn't inclined to take those feelings into account when rendering his judgement.

Intellectual Characteristics

Varyjon is the very definition of an absolutist. His judgement is rendered in perfect balance to the crimes committed, exactly as is due. This does not cause him to be conceited. Rather, he simply does as his divine purpose dictates, leaving the feelings and arguments on the matter for the judged to concern themselves with.

Morality & Philosophy

  • Know the value of all things, and ensure that the proper due is paid for anything lost, taken, bought, or bargained.
  • Everything must be paid in due time. Whether something is deserved is immaterial.
  • Justice is in proper apportioning of dues.
  • Value is not equal across cases. Those with more have more to lose.
  • To gain through trickery is to owe a debt.
  • Judgment is not subject to emotion, neither is the rendering of punishment nor the reception of the same.
