The Divine Usurpation - Irré Takes the Sun Throne

The People of the Blood believe that a war in heaven occurred in the deep past, an event that marked the End of the Age of Myth and the beginning of the Age of Heroes. The Creator Goddess is regarded with reverence, but it had been widely believed that she holds Creation at arm's length, so to speak. This point, in and of itself, is subject to great debate due to the differing notions on whether Yhera is a conscious creator, or a dreamer of dreams. This tends to be the main theological difference between high elves, who believe in the conscious creator, and the wood elves, who tend to believe that Yhera dreamed Creation into existence. Regardless of this, though, the observation has been that the Creator Goddess herself rarely interacts with her own family, let alone the rest of Creation. As such, the Heavens are presided over by the God and Goddess who occupy the Sun and Moon Thrones. Conventionally, the Sun Throne is occupied by Islan and the Moon Throne by Moya.  There are other deities who have occupied those thrones, however, and this the tale of one of those times.    The High Elves have been very fastidious in ensuring that each of the deities are well-ordered and stratified. The Creator Goddess is the Queen of Heaven, the unchallenged Mistress of All. Her intended co-equal was Seedrik, the King-in-Exile and now God of the Underworld. The story of his ambition, hubris and eventual downfall to the Underworld realm will be another article. This is why Islan and Moya are referred to as the Prince and Princess of Heaven, they are intended to be the "children" of the Creator Goddess herself in this analogy. All other gods and goddesses have been organized into a divine hierarchy, and one that includes the "problematic" deities like Seedrik, Irré, Leera, Vadrik and even Nymarga and Islik.    While Geniché and Getima are referred to as the Twin Queens of the Earth, they occupy a different sphere of godhood. They do not concern themselves in the affairs of the Heavens, nor do they pay much mind to the machinations that have occurred there. Usually, they act through the half-Heavenly and half-Earthly Goddess, Arma, to interact with the Heavens and vice-versa. With Islik abandoning the Pantheon to become the Divine King, Arma has increasingly taken on the role of Divine Intercessor between Creation and the Heavens in addition to her role as Goddess of Life and Death in Nature and Mistress of the Wild Hunt. The final part of that separation would be the so-called Children of the Earth (the Green, the Red, the Grey and the Black).    Just as the Earth falls under the Thrones of Heaven occupied by Geniché and Getima, the Heavens fall under the Thrones of Heaven occupied by Islan and Moya. From time to time, other deities occupy the Thrones, but usually only for ritual or cyclical purposes. For example, the Queen of Heaven has ordained that the world is plunged into darkness during the day on a regular basis and during this time, Islan is throught to retire from the Sun Throne, and his "brother" Irré takes his place. These periods of eclipse are times of ill-omen and potential disaster and they happen with precise frequency. The same holds true for the occupation of the Moon Throne, where Moya is generally there going through her phases, there are times when the light of the Moon is changed and Leera takes the throne for a time. It should be stated that the emergence of Vadrik occurred during the Age of Heroes, and the Ringed Moon resulted in the first and following Landfall events that threaten existence of natural life on Creation, another event that occurs with regularity, but is not regarded as an intended part of the heavenly cycle.    Just as Seedrik the King-in-Exile found himself attempting to usurp Creation, so too did Irré with the Sun Throne. No longer content to occupy the Throne a handful of times every Age, the Black Sun took the throne for himself during the Age of Myth and refused to give it up. Infused with the power of the Throne itself, Irré made a mockery of the heavenly cycle and played havoc with Creation as a whole -- the earthly realm included. Putting up with the desecration for only seven days, Moya abdicated the Moon Throne. Irré appointed his longtime partner, Leera the Crimson Moon, in her place. They ruled the Heavens with avarice, cruelty, and excess. The Gods and Goddesses that remained, they called out to the Queen of Heaven to respond, but she was alarmingly silent. Fearing that the Black Sun had somehow found a way to conspire with Seedrik to neutralize Yhera, the remaining deities attempted to reassert the proper, righteous heavenly cycle.    In this, they were largely unable. It was expected that the ones occupying the Thrones of Heaven would willingly adhere to the heavenly cycle, not to attempt to change it. When Irré rebelled, it was the first time things did not occur as planned, and it threw all of Creation into turmoil. That fact did not surprise the Queens of the Earth, nor did it surprise Arma, and it greatly amused Seedrik. While Islan, Moya, Ami, and Diva struggled against the Usurpers, Yaro worked with Arma to investigate what it would take to reassert the heavenly cycle -- the trick laid in interrupting the earthly end of the Great Cycle -- to ensure that souls did not move through the Great Cycle as intended.    Whatever they did seemed to work. While Yhera did not seem to mind the changes and chaos in the Heavens, the interruption of the Great Cycle of Rebirth demanded her attention. Yhera returned, and she returned with great anger and vengeance that created the goddess Hatha, who empowered and recruited mortals and took the battle to Heavens, and threw Irré and Leera from the Thrones of Heaven. In response, Irré ripped open a rift in Creation that would eventually result in the emergence of Vadrik the Ringed Moon and the Landfall events that would plague the Earth from then on.   There is many stories, songs, contemplations, and debates about the history and lessons of the the Divine Usurpation. There isn't much agreement, either, and there are major differences between how the Usurpation is viewed by various cultures within the People of Blood.
