the Undying King

The lich lord Vecna presides over villainous mages, conspiring politicians, and envious servants as the dark god of necromancy, undeath, and secrets. Once a dangerously clever and powerful archmage-turned-lich called Archmage Vecruth Na'Qirr, his hunger for dominion over all mysteries and obsession with conquering the pantheon led to The Morning War. Vecruth gained a mass following of arcane magic users and those who served evil that all pledged allegiance to him, granting him untold power as he elevated himself to a minor deity. With true divinity in reach, Vecruth would gather his forces to march upon Aon in The Exalted Expanse to claim dominion over the seat of the Dawn Deities and bring the world of Ardyn under his malevolent rule. The forces of The Exalted Expanse fought back under the leadership of Celesta Sylvaine, however, and she defeated Vecruth at his base in The Warpstar Wastes. When Vecruth was destroyed, his material body dissolved in a destructive wave of necromantic energy leaving behind only his left eye and hand, and killing Celesta in the process. His enduring spirit reformed through the years, gathering new knowledcge and power in the worlds beyond death, and Vecruth was reborn on Ardyn in the year 123 CR as Vecna, the Undying King.
Realm: Vecna calls no place among the planes his home, instead wandering in search of powerful artifacts and secrets to further his unknowable plots.
Depiction: Those who claim to have looked on Vecna’s form speak of a tall, skeletal lich swathed in tattered robes and enchanted jewels, missing both his left hand and left eye.
Enemies: While Vecna loathes all other gods and wishes to destroy them and become the sole divine power in the planes, he has a particular hatred for Mystra, who inhabited the body of the woman that once destroyed him. As the goddess of knowledge, Mystra seeks to share with the world the same secrets Vecna guards for himself, and his followers work diligently to undermine and destroy the Library of the Arcane Eye and any others who follow her path. The Raven Queen also despises Vecna, and sees his presence as a mighty affront to her purpose.
