Drow
Descended from an earlier subrace of elves, the drow were banished from the surface world for following the goddess Lolth down the path of evil. Now they have built their own civilization in the depths of the Underdark, patterned after the Way of Lolth. Also called dark elves, night elves or myrk'alfen in elvish; the drow have skin that resembles charcoal or obsidian, as well as stark white or pale yellow hair. They commonly have very pale eyes (so pale as to be mistaken for white) in shades of lilac, silver, pink, red, and blue. The drow of Lolthite society are hated and feared due to their infamous cruelty though, some non-evil and even good drow existed within the Underdark. Despite their reputation, drow do not have an innate inclination towards evil, with their morality having been shaped and colored by their society.
In many ways, the drow resembled other elves. Their bodies were typically wiry and athletic, while their faces were chiseled and attractive, though they were taller and thinner than other elves. Due to a process of selective breeding that lasted for several generations, the drow of Lolthite society (especially nobles) looked attractive even in comparison to other elven subraces. Though their alluring appearance could be used for seduction, it was more often utilized to instill fear.
Civilization and Culture
History
Some sources claim that Lolth created the drow late in the Founding or early in the Magus Era. The drow were once a wise, beautiful people with silvery hair and ash-colored skin. But in the Magus Era, their society became decadent and cruel, and their leaders fell under the influence of the Spider Queen; centuries before the Scourging, the drow primarily worshiped her.
When the Scourging began, the drow sided with Lolth against the elven god Corellon and their followers. But before the drow even saw battle, Thor, the thunderlord, impaled Lolth against a cliffside with one heave of his thunderspear, and the Spider Queen was banished back to the Abyss. The suddenly leaderless drow were driven from the surface world and forced to rebuild their empire underground.
Meanwhile, Lolth's thick, silvery blood pooled in the dark caverns beneath the surface of the world. In the years that followed, her most devoted drow servants discovered the blood and drank of it deeply, granting them power and gradually twisting themselves into half-spider hybrids called driders.
However, the seeds had already been planted for a great many drow, whom Lolth considered her children, to escape her influence and following the Scourging, Lolth's children could feel the lessening of their banished god's influence.
