The Shadow Weave Physical / Metaphysical Law in Ardrim | World Anvil

The Shadow Weave

The Shadow Weave was a dark, twisted recreation of the Weave. However, while the Weave was created by Mystryl, the Shadow Weave was created by Shar after studying the workings of the Mystryl's Weave, envious of Mystryl's power. She plotted with several other evil deities to assassinate Mystryl. Shar's hope was for the Shadow Weave to replace the Weave upon Mystryl's assassination. Fortunately for Mystryl, this plan failed. Unlike the Weave, the Shadow Weave could only be accessed by spellcasters by permanently losing a part of their mind or by making a deal with either Shar herself or their own dark patron deity.   The Shadow Weave was also fundamentally different in the types of magic that could be used with it. For example, any spell that created light could not be cast using the Shadow Weave. Also, the magic of the Shadow Weave affected the nonphysical world far more effectively than it can affect the physical world. As such, transmutation and evocation magic cast through it is muted, while necromantic magic, illusionary magic, and enchantment magic. This separation in function from the Weave also creates some interesting interactions. For example, inside of dead magic or wild magic zones, magic cast using the Shadow Weave still functions normally. However, anti-magic fields block the use of both. Also, the two Weaves have difficulty countering magic cast from the other. These interactions and limitations also extend to magical items enchanted using the Shadow Weave.

Manifestation

The Shadow Weave, like the Weave, cannot be visualized or physically manifested as it is an unseeable fabric of power tied into the very fabric of reality.
